Ecological-Fishery Forecasting of Squid Stock Dynamics under Climate Variability and Change: Review, Challenges, and Recommendations

The octopus fishery on the Campeche Bank (Yucatan, Mexico) is considered the third largest in the world. In Yucatan, two fleets target this resource: an artisanal fleet and a semi-industrial fleet. The artisanal fleet only catches Octopus maya, while the semi-industrial fleet catches two species, O. Maya and O. “vulgaris” Type II, because it operates at deeper waters ( > 30 m). Since there is no information on the abundance of O. “vulgaris” Type II, management is based only on O. Maya. In order to generate information about the abundance of this species, four fishing research cruises were carried out in the northeastern area of the continental shelf off the Yucatan Peninsula. Four methods (a stratified random method, a swept area, geostatistics and a weighted swept area) were applied and compared to determine the instantaneous abundance and biomass of both species in the study area. The lowest potential biomass was calculated with the geostatistical method, with values between 18.5% and 36.7% lower than the other three methods. O. “vulgaris” Type II showed the lowest biomass (37.8±3.36 t) during May and July and the highest (189.56±11.6 t) in December. Our findings revealed that the total abun­dance of both species was similar in the study area, with a geographic overlap whose amplitude changed throughout the year according to the geographic position: O. Maya dominated at approximately 88°W, while O. “vulgaris” Type II dominated towards the southeast at 87°W.

Tracking the provenance of octopus using isotopic and multi-elemental analysis

Recent studies have shown that coastal and shelf cephalopod populations have increased globally over the last six decades. Although cephalopod landings are dominated by the squid fishery, which represents nearly 80% of the worldwide cephalopod catches, octopuses and cuttlefishes represent ∼10% each. Total reported global production of octopuses over the past three decades indicates a relatively steady increase in catch, almost doubling from 179,042 t in 1980 to 355,239 t in 2014. Octopus fisheries are likely to continue to grow in importance and magnitude as many finfish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. More than twenty described octopus species are harvested from some 90 countries worldwide. The current review describes the major octopus fisheries around the globe, providing an overview of species targeted, ecological and biological features of exploited stocks, catches and the key aspects of management.

World Octopus Fisheries

The purpose of the work is a commercial and biological assessment of basic invertebrate species and other aquatic organisms in the northern regions of the Sea of Japan. Studies provide current characteristics of many commercial populations of bottom hydrobionts inhabiting depths of 24–611m.The material and methods are standard for fisheries research in Russia. Materials were collected in 29.04.-01.06.2022, in bottom trawl survey. The main objects of Decapoda research are commercial species of crabs and shrimps, as well as other species of hydrobionts.The new data revealed the following: 1) among crabs, the commercial stock increased slightly everywhere in Paralithodes camtschaticus, but it also decreased everywhere in P. platypus and Chionoecetes opilio, and in the crab Erimacrus isenbeckii, there was a significant increase only in Western Sakhalin; 2) among shrimps, the commercial stock increased everywhere in Pandalus borealis and P. hypsinotus, and in P. goniurus increased in the north of the Primorye subzone, but decreased in Western Sakhalin; 3) the biological condition and stock   of other commercial invertebrates and fish of the bottom complex was satisfactory or a slight increase in their numbers was noted.The practical significance of the research is to provide fishing and biological information for annual prognostic materials on the total allowable catches of bottom commercial species of hydrobionts for the areas of the northern part of the Sea of Japan.
