Journal ArticleDOI
Chandra View of the Warm-Hot IGM toward 1ES 1553+113: Absorption Line Detections and Identifications (Paper I)
Fabrizio Nicastro,Fabrizio Nicastro,Martin Elvis,Yair Krongold,Smita Mathur,A. Gupta,Charles W. Danforth,Xavier Barcons,Stefano Borgani,Stefano Borgani,Enzo Branchini,Renyue Cen,Romeel Davé,Jelle Kaastra,F. B. S. Paerels,Luigi Piro,J. M. Shull,Yoh Takei,Luca Zappacosta +18 more
TL;DR: In this article, the first results from the pilot 500 ks Chandra-LETG Large Program observation of the soft X-ray brightest source in the z>=0.4 sky, the blazar 1ES 1553+113, aimed to secure the first uncontroversial detections of the missing baryons in the X-rays.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Changing-look Quasar Mrk 590 Is Awakening
Smita Mathur,Kelly D. Denney,A. Gupta,A. Gupta,Marianne Vestergaard,Marianne Vestergaard,G. De Rosa,Yair Krongold,Fabrizio Nicastro,J. Collinson,M. R. Goad,Kirk T. Korista,Richard W. Pogge,B. M. Peterson,B. M. Peterson +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present follow-up observations to the original discovery and characterization of this "changing-look" active galactic nucleus (AGN), showing that the soft excess is not due to reprocessed hard X-ray emission, but is connected to the UV continuum through warm Comptonization.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Two-Phase, Two-Velocity Ionized Absorber in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 5548
Mercedes Andrade-Velazquez,Yair Krongold,Martin Elvis,Fabrizio Nicastro,Fabrizio Nicastro,Fabrizio Nicastro,Nancy S. Brickhouse,Luc Binette,Smita Mathur,E. Jimenez-Bailon +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of X-ray high-quality grating spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 was carried out using archival Chandra-High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer and low energy transmission Grating spectrometer observations for a total exposure time of 800 ks.
Journal ArticleDOI
Studying the WHIM with Gamma Ray Bursts
E. Branchini,Eugenio Ursino,Alessandra Corsi,Davide Martizzi,Lorenzo Amati,J. W. den Herder,Massimiliano Galeazzi,Bruce Gendre,Jelle Kaastra,L. Moscardini,Fabrizio Nicastro,Takaya Ohashi,F. B. S. Paerels,L. Piro,Mauro Roncarelli,Yoh Takei,Matteo Viel +16 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a micro-calorimeters-based detector was proposed to detect and characterize the physical state of the missing baryons at low redshift by analyzing the X-ray absorption spectra of the Gamma Ray Burst [GRB] afterglows, measured by a micro calorimeters based detector with 3 eV resolution and 1000 cm2 effective area.
Journal ArticleDOI
Xmm-newton and fuse tentative evidence for a whim filament along the line of sight to pks 0558-504
Fabrizio Nicastro,Fabrizio Nicastro,Fabrizio Nicastro,Yair Krongold,D. Fields,M. L. Conciatore,L. Zappacosta,Martin Elvis,Smita Mathur,I. E. Papadakis +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a possible O VIII X-ray absorption line at z = 0.1183 {+-} 0.0001 which, if confirmed, will be the first one associated with a broad H I Ly{beta} (BLB: FWHM = 160{sup +50} {sub -30} km s{sup -1}) absorber.
