These studies are designed to help the establishment of causal relationships between exposures and outcomes, taking into consideration the duration and the time of disease development. Chronic diseases have a long period of development, generating a mis-match between the exposure, the beginning of the disease and the first clinical signals. Oral health is an excellent area to study life course deter-minants of the diseases since the most impacting oral diseases and disor-ders are cumulative and chronic, present relatively high prevalence and are easy to be identified.

Life course epidemiology and its implication for oral health.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o estresse de contracao de tres resinas compostas sob diferentes metodos de fotoativacao: fotoativacao convencional halogena (G1), fotoativacao "soft-start" halogena (G2) e fotoativacao por LED (G3). As resinas compostas testadas foram a Filtek Z-100 (3M/ESPE), Filtek Z-250 (3M/ESPE) e Solitaire 2 (Heraeus Kulzer). Para G1, um aparelho fotoativador XL-3000 (3M/ESPE) com intensidade de 507 mW/cm2 foi empregado. Em G2, o mesmo aparelho foi utilizado, mas com a intensidade reduzida nos primeiros 20 s (166 mW/cm2); em G3 foi utilizado um fotoativador LED Ultrablue I (DMC) com intensidade de 125 mW/cm2. O teste foi realizado com uma maquina de ensaio universal DL 2000 (EMIC) e duas matrizes metalicas com um espaco de 1 mm entre elas. A resina composta foi inserida no espaco entre as matrizes e fotopolimerizada de acordo com o protocolo supracitado. O estresse foi registrado nos diferentes periodos de tempo: 10, 20, 40, 60, 90 e 120 s. Um aumento linear significante do estresse de contracao em relacao ao tempo foi observado, exceto para a Z-100 em G2. No geral, a fotoativacao por LED (G3) reduziu o estresse gerado em comparacao com a fotoativacao convencional halogena (G1). Em G3, a resina com co-iniciador na sua composicao apresentou menor estresse em comparacao com as outras resinas testadas. A combinacao entre resina composta e o metodo de fotoativacao produziu diferentes padroes de comportamento do estresse. A polimerizacao com LED reduziu o estresse de contracao inicial nos tres materiais e foi influenciada pela presenca de co-iniciadores nas resinas compostas.

Shrinkage stress of three composites under different polymerization methods

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of additional acid etching on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and Weibull modulus (m) of two adhesive systems applied to caries-affected dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety human molars with coronal carious lesions were sectioned to produce flat coronal surfaces containing caries-affected (CAD) and sound dentin (SD). The teeth were allocated to 6 groups: SB-CT: Control - Single Bond applied according to the manufacturer's instructions; SB+15: Single Bond with additional 35% phosphoric acid etching for 15 s; SB+30: Single Bond with additional etching for 30 s; CF-CT: Control - Clearfil SE Bond applied according to the manufacturer's instructions; CF+15: Clearfil SE Bond with additional 35% phosphoric acid etching for 15 s; CF+30: Clearfil SE Bond with additional etching for 30 s. Composite crowns were incrementally built up. The teeth were sectioned after 24 h in order to produce 2 to 3 slices involving each dentin substrate. The slices were trimmed into hourglass-shaped specimens (n = 30) and tested in tension at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA, Tukey's test (p < 0.05) and Weibull statistics. RESULTS The μTBS to CAD was lower than to SD, except for SB+30. The additional etching increased the μTBS to CAD. The μTBS to SD increased with CF, but decreased with SB. CAD produced lower values of m with both adhesive systems. SB resulted in lower m in sound dentin than CF. The additional etching did not affect the m. CONCLUSION The additional etching increases the μTBS to CAD, but not enough to reach the μTBS values obtained in SD. The structural reliability of the bond to CAD is not affected by the additional etching.

Effect of additional acid etching on bond strength and structural reliability of adhesive systems applied to caries-affected dentin .

This aim of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical and biological properties of novel experimental cements (Hybrid, Paste and Resin) based on synergistic combinations of existing materials, including pH, diametral tensile strength (DTS) and cytotoxicity comparing them with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA - Angelus®) and a glass ionomer cement (GIC) developed at our laboratory. For the physicochemical and biological tests, specimens with standard dimensions were produced. pH measurements were performed with digital pH meter at the following time intervals: 3, 24, 48 and 72 h. For the DTS test, cylindrical specimens were subjected to compressive load until fracture. The MTT assay was performed for cytotoxicity evaluation. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Paste group showed pH values similar to MTA, and Hybrid group presented pH values similar to GIC (p>0.05). The tested materials showed pH values ranging from alkaline to near neutrality at the evaluated times. MTA and GIC showed similar DTS values. The lowest and highest DTS values were seen in the Paste and Resin groups, respectively (p<0.05). Cell viability for MTA and experimental Hybrid, Paste and Resin groups was 49%, 93%, 90% and 86%, respectively, when compared with the control group. The photo-cured experimental resin cement showed similar or superior performance compared with the current commercial or other tested experimental materials.
