The knowledge about the potential adverse effects of radiotherapy compared to dental composites is a useful information for the clinician's decision regarding adoption of repairs or replacement of dental restorations during oral cancer treatment. This study evaluated the effects of irradiation on microhardness and surface roughness of a microfilled and a packable composite resin. The microfilled composite resin demonstrated significantly lower microhardness and a smoother surface compared to the packable composite resin (p 0.05). Meanwhile, irradiation did not produce a significantly rougher surface (P > 0.05), but specimens submitted to abrasion exhibited a significant increase in surface roughness for both composite resins (P < 0.05). It was concluded that while irradiation can adversely affect the hardness of tested composite resins, it does not interfere with surface roughness.

Effect of radiotherapy on the hardness and surface roughness of two composite resins.

BACKGROUND/AIM The overall prognosis for teeth that have suffered concussion and/or subluxation is not yet known. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature to identify the incidence of sequelae or complications associated with concussion and subluxation of permanent teeth. METHODS Four databases were used as follows: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Lilacs. The search for studies was carried out up to March 31, 2019, to identify studies evaluating patients diagnosed with dental trauma classified as concussion or subluxation and reporting their respective sequelae and/or complications. No restrictions were made for gender, follow-up period, and the year of publication or language. The selection of studies and data extraction were carried out independently by two researchers. The studies were grouped according to the type of trauma. A random-effect model was applied to calculate the pooled odds ratios (OR) and their respective 95% confidence intervals for each type of trauma. RESULTS Thirteen articles were included in the systematic review, and six were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled incidence of unfavorable outcomes (any sequel or complication) in teeth with concussion was 12% by the end of 1 year of follow up (0.12; CI95% 0.00-0.26). The pooled incidence of unfavorable outcomes in teeth with subluxation was 18% (0.18; CI95 % 0.07-0.29) by the end of 1 year of follow up. CONCLUSION Concussion and subluxation showed sequelae and/or complications by the end of 1 year, including pulp necrosis. Patients who have suffered mild supportive tissue injuries should be monitored.

Complications and sequelae of concussion and subluxation in permanent teeth: A systematic review and meta-analysis

To analyse the prevalence of dysphagia perception and associated factors among community-dwelling older adults in Pelotas, Brazil. A total of 1447 community-dwelling individuals aged 60 and older participated in a cross-sectional population-based study carried out in 2014. Dysphagia perception was assessed using the following question: "Do you have swallowing difficulties? (Yes/No)". Independent variables included sociodemographic, behavioural and health characteristics. Poisson regression was used to obtain prevalence ratios. Dysphagia perception prevalence was 8.1%, higher among women (PR 1.63, 95% CI 1.07; 2.46) and in subjects older than 80 years (PR 1.88, 95% CI 1.16; 3.03). Older adults with 1–7 years of schooling were more likely to present dysphagia (PR 1.62; 95% CI 1.09; 2.40). Those who did not use dental prosthesis (PR 1.85; 95% CI 1.08; 3.16), who presented dry mouth sensation (PR 4.10; 95% CI 2.59; 6.51) and multimorbidity (PR 30.0; 95% CI 4.09; 219.45) were more likely to present dysphagia perception. The participants who consumed alcohol were 60% less likely to report dysphagia perception (PR 0.43; 95% CI 0.22; 0.86). One out of twelve older adults presented dysphagia perception, and associations with sociodemographic characteristics and other health problems were found. Early identification of dysphagia should be a public health and clinical concern.

Dysphagia Perception Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults from a Municipality in Southern Brazil.

Background At present, it remains uncertain which method to decontaminate N95 is most suitable and should be recommended to healthcare professionals worldwide. Objectives The aim of this scoping review was to map and compile the available evidence about the effectiveness of decontaminating N95 masks against coronavirus. Methods We selected studies written in English assessing or discussing decontamination strategies of N95 masks against coronavirus. The search and study screening were performed in PubMed and SCOPUS by two independent researchers. A descriptive analysis was performed considering the study design of included studies. Results We included nineteen studies. Eight articles were letter to the editors, five were in vitro studies, three were literature reviews, and three were classified as other study designs. The use of vaporized hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet irradiation were the strategies most cited. However, there is a lack of evidence and consensus related to the best method of N95 masks decontamination. Conclusion The evidence towards decontamination strategies of N95 masks against coronavirus remains scarce. Vaporized hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet irradiation seem the current standard for N95 masks decontamination.

Decontamination of N95 masks against coronavirus: a scoping review

This study aimed to assess the association between individual and school environment variables and physical activity levels in Brazilian schoolchildren with 8-12 years of age.  A sample of children from 20 private and public schools (n=1,210) was selected. Total and leisure-time physical activities and active transportation to school (AT) were measured using a self-report instrument. Total and leisure-time physical inactivity (PI) were defined as The prevalence of PI, leisure-time PI, and AT to school were 69.2%, 75.8% and 70.5%, respectively. Multilevel models showed that PI was more frequent among girls, and was negatively associated with older age and higher maternal schooling. Girls were more inactive during leisure-time. For contextual variables, greater Physical Education teacher/student ratio was associated with lower levels of both total and leisure-time PI. AT was negatively associated with higher income and positively associated with older age. Students from public schools use more AT. Based on the prevalence of PI found, strategies focused at increasing physical activity levels should be implemented immediately. Also, our findings suggest that both individual and school contextual variables were associated with levels of PI, varying between domains.
