Gender-Specific Practice Guidelines for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: Perioperative Management*
Fred H. Edwards,Victor A. Ferraris,David M. Shahian,Eric D. Peterson,Anthony P. Furnary,Constance K. Haan,Charles R. Bridges +6 more
TL;DR: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Workforce on Evidence-Based Surgery has carried out an objective review of published information in coronary bypass surgery, finding contradictions that leave surgeons with conflicting recommendations for care.
Journal ArticleDOI
The STS AVR + CABG Composite Score: A Report of the STS Quality Measurement Task Force
David M. Shahian,Xia He,Jeffrey P. Jacobs,J. Scott Rankin,Karl F. Welke,Fred H. Edwards,Giovanni Filardo,Frank L. Fazzalari,Anthony P. Furnary,Paul Kurlansky,J. Matthew Brennan,Vinay Badhwar,Sean M. O'Brien +12 more
TL;DR: The final STS AVR+CABG composite performance measure is based on 3 years of data and 95% credible intervals and includes risk-adjusted mortality and morbidity but not internal mammary artery use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease.
Molly Szerlip,Alan Zajarias,Sreekanth Vemalapalli,Matthew Brennan,Dadi Dai,Hersh S. Maniar,Brian R. Lindman,Ralph G. Brindis,John D. Carroll,Mohanad Hamandi,Fred H. Edwards,Frederick L. Grover,Sean M. O'Brien,Eric D. Peterson,John S. Rumsfeld,Dave Shahian,E. Murat Tuzcu,David R. Holmes,Vinod H. Thourani,Michael J. Mack +19 more
TL;DR: Patients undergoing TAVR with ESRD are at higher risk and had higher in-hospital mortality and bleeding, but similar vascular complications, when compared with those who are not dialysis dependent, and the 1-year survival raises concerns regarding diminished benefit.
Journal ArticleDOI
The diabetic disadvantage: historical outcomes measures in diabetic patients undergoing cardiac surgery -- the pre-intravenous insulin era.
TL;DR: The diabetic population was found to have higher rates of 30-day mortality, deep sternal wound infection, stroke, and longer length of stay than the nondiabetic population and diabetic patients had approximately two-fold worse 10-year survival.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons voluntary public reporting initiative: the first 4 years.
David M. Shahian,Frederick L. Grover,Richard L. Prager,Fred H. Edwards,Giovanni Filardo,Sean M. O'Brien,Xia He,Anthony P. Furnary,J. Rankin,Vinay Badhwar,Joseph C. Cleveland,Frank L. Fazzalari,Mitchell J. Magee,Jane Han,Jeffrey P. Jacobs +14 more
TL;DR: STS programs that voluntarily participate in public reporting have significantly higher volumes and performance and no evidence of risk aversion was found.
