Mechanisms controlling the durability of thermal barrier coatings

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present relationships between the durability, the governing material properties and salient morphological features of thermal barrier coatings and show that the failure is ultimately connected to the large residual compression in the thermally grown oxide through its roles in amplifying imperfections near the interface.
Journal ArticleDOI

High temperature corrosion in energy systems

TL;DR: The role of grain boundaries in corrosion product scales as short-circuit transport paths for the outward diffusion of metal and the inward ingress of oxygen, sulfur and carbon needs to be clarified.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oxidation of MoSi2 and comparison with other silicide materials

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied three fabrication conditions of MoSi2 in oxygen and in air: 500, 1000 and 1000°C, and the single crystal of a single crystal at 500°C.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Oxidation of Ferritic Stainless Steels in Simulated Solid-Oxide Fuel-Cell Atmospheres

TL;DR: The cyclic oxidation of a variety of chromia-forming ferritic stainless steels has been studied in the temperature range 700-900°C in atmospheres relevant to solid-oxide fuel-cell operation as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Some water vapor effects during the oxidation of alloys that are α-Al2O3 formers

TL;DR: In this paper, a number of alloys and coatings that form α-Al2O3 scales under oxidizing conditions were investigated at 1100 °C in dry air and air containing fixed partial pressures of water vapor.
