The exponential traffic growth, demand for high speed wireless data communications, as well as incessant deployment of innovative wireless technologies, services, and applications, have put considerable pressure on the mobile network operators (MNOs). Consequently, cellular access network performance in terms of capacity, quality of service, and network coverage needs further considerations. In order to address the challenges, MNOs, as well as equipment vendors, have given significant attention to the small-cell schemes based on cloud radio access network (C-RAN). This is due to its beneficial features in terms of performance optimization, cost-effectiveness, easier infrastructure deployment, and network management. Nevertheless, the C-RAN architecture imposes stringent requirements on the fronthaul link for seamless connectivity. Digital radio over fiber-based common public radio interface (CPRI) is the fundamental means of distributing baseband samples in the C-RAN fronthaul. However, optical links which are based on CPRI have bandwidth and flexibility limitations. Therefore, these limitations might constrain or make them impractical for the next generation mobile systems which are envisaged not only to support carrier aggregation and multi-band but also envisioned to integrate technologies like millimeter-wave (mm-wave) and massive multiple-input multiple-output antennas into the base stations. In this paper, we present comprehensive tutorial on technologies, requirements, architectures, challenges, and proffer potential solutions on means of achieving an efficient C-RAN optical fronthaul for the next-generation network such as the fifth generation network and beyond. A number of viable fronthauling technologies such as mm-wave and wireless fidelity are considered and this paper mainly focuses on optical technologies such as optical fiber and free-space optical. We also present feasible means of reducing the system complexity, cost, bandwidth requirement, and latency in the fronthaul. Furthermore, means of achieving the goal of green communication networks through reduction in the power consumption by the system are considered.

Toward an Efficient C-RAN Optical Fronthaul for the Future Networks: A Tutorial on Technologies, Requirements, Challenges, and Solutions

In this paper, we will address the benefits of the coherent detection in future optical access networks. The scarcity of the optical spectrum, the required flexibility, and constant evolution of requirements highlight the effectiveness of coherent techniques toward the future passive optical networks (PON). A set of architectures for coherent optical access networks will be presented and the key attributes of each scenario will be investigated. In addition, as a basis to decrease the cost of the local oscillator (LO) at customer side, we experimentally investigate the possibility of using a low-cost laser as LO with real-time detection of a Nyquist-shaped differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) signal using simple 8-bit digital signal processing (DSP) on a field-programmable gate array. Moreover, we experimentally derive a set of optimized parameters and their impact on the network operation for coherent ultradense wavelength-division multiplexing (UDWDM) systems. The balance between the number of channels, power budget, and dynamic power range will be evaluated. Furthermore, we demonstrate a reconfigurable real-time receiver DSP for future flexible UDWDM-PON systems applying the DQPSK and D8PSK modulation formats. By reviewing some of the motivations for this technology, such as flexibility, spectral efficiency, as well as compatibility with software-defined networking, we show that this technology is approaching the required maturity.

Coherent Access: A Review

New technologies for ultradense WDM-PON (udWDM-PON), enabled by coherent techniques and low-cost devices, are developed for an efficient utilization of the optical spectrum, revealing that the “Wavelength-to-the-User” concept can be feasible. In this paper, an udWDM-PON with only 6.25-GHz channel spacing is implemented with conventional DFB lasers, for a splitter-based PON infrastructure with 256 ONUs. The results of the analysis of udWDM access network architecture with respect to their associated complexity, cost, and migration scenarios, exhibit the potential for higher aggregate throughput, higher split ratios, and node consolidation, when compared to competing technologies.

Technologies for Cost-Effective udWDM-PONs

A new passive optical network (PON) for access, making use of ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UDWDM) by densely spacing channels by a few gigahertz and introducing the "wavelength-to-the-user" concept, is proposed. The key challenge will be developing low-cost coherent transceivers that provide an excellent selectivity while avoiding filters and furnishing high sensitivity, which will allow high splitting ratios, large numbers of users, and long-distance reach. The optical distribution network (ODN) at the outside plant is based on splitters and is kept compatible with legacy systems. Optical network unit (ONU) designs realized with coherent transceivers using one or two lasers are presented, and the corresponding optical line terminal (OLT) architectures are introduced. The ONUs at the customer premises have lasers with limited thermal tenability, and their wavelengths are randomly distributed in a band. By using heuristic dynamic wavelength assignment (DWA) schemes and extending the original working band, the required optical band is obtained and optimized. In activation processes, ONU acceptances up to 99.9% are achieved. Furthermore, in operation scenarios under indoor and also under outdoor environmental conditions, ONU blocking probabilities below 0.1% and ONU availability ratios (OARs) up to 99.9% are demonstrated. The PON is dimensioned according to the number of deployed users and system reach; moreover, power safety and also fiber non-linearities constraints are evaluated, illustrating the characteristics of the projected network. Finally, the coexistence with legacy networks is discussed.

UDWDM-PON using low-cost coherent transceivers with limited tunability and heuristic DWA

We experimentally demonstrate an innovative ultradense wavelength division multiplexing (UDWDM) passive optical networks (PON) that implements the full $\lambda \text {-to-the-user}$ concept in a filterless distribution network. Key element of the proposed system is a novel class of coherent transceivers, purposely developed with a nonconventional technical approach. Indeed, they are designed and realized to avoid D/A–A/D converter stages and digital signal processing in favor of simple analog processing so that they match system, cost, and power consumption requirements of the access networks without sacrificing the overall performance. These coherent transceivers target different use case scenarios (residential, business, fixed, wireless) still keeping perfect compatibility and co-existence with legacy infrastructures installed to support gray, time division multiplexed PON systems. Moreover, the availability of coherent transceivers of different cost/performance ratios allows for deployments of different quality service grades. In this paper, we report the successful field trial of the proposed systems in a testbed where 14 UDWDM channels (and one legacy E-PON system) are transmitted simultaneously in a dark-fiber network deployed in the city of Pisa (Italy), delivering real-time and/or test traffic. The trial demonstrated filterless operations (each remote node selects individually its own UDWDM channel on a fine $\text{6.25}\text{-}\text {GHz}$ grid), real-time GbE transmissions (by using either fully analog or light digital signal processing), multirate transmission ( $\text{1.25}\; \text{and}\; \text{10}\,\text {Gb/s}$ ), high optical distribution network loss (18–40 dB) as well as a bidirectional channel monitoring system.

Field-Trial of a High-Budget, Filterless, $\lambda$ -to-the-User, UDWDM-PON Enabled by an Innovative Class of Low-Cost Coherent Transceivers

The results of the analysis of the COCONUT (“COst-effective COhereNt Ultra-dense-WDM-PON for λ-to-the-user access”) project architectures with respect to their associated cost, power consumption and migration scenarios are presented. COCONUT develops udWDM access with simplified coherent technology to allow for node consolidation, increased number of homes passed, and higher split ratios when compared to standardised technologies. COCONUT can operate in a very narrow spectral band due to the 6.25 – 12.5 GHz wavelength channel spacing and provides increased per user capacity when compared to currently deployed solutions. COCONUT technology shows 80% cost reduction when compared to a conventional coherent receiver. Also in terms of power consumption at 10G, the adopted transceiver solutions compare well to TWDM PON solution, achieving less than 2 W/Gb/s.

Advanced Hybrid Integrated Transceivers to Realize Flexible Terabit Networking

In dense IoT deployments of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), sensor placement, coverage, connectivity, and energy constraints determine the overall network lifetime. In large-size WSNs, it is difficult to maintain a trade-off among these conflicting constraints and, thus, scaling is difficult. In the related research literature, various solutions are proposed that attempt to address near-optimal behavior in polynomial time, the majority of which relies on heuristics. In this paper, we formulate a topology control and lifetime extension problem regarding sensor placement, under coverage and energy constraints, and solve it by applying and testing several neural network configurations. To do so, the neural network dynamically proposes and handles sensor placement coordinates in a 2D plane, having the ultimate goal to extend network lifetime. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm improves network lifetime, while maintaining communication and energy constraints, for medium- and large-scale deployments.
