Hill model of transpolar potential saturation: Comparisons with MHD simulations

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison between a simple but general model of solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling (the Hill model) and the output of a global magnetospheric MHD code, the Integrated Space Weather Prediction Model (ISM), was made.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transpolar potential saturation: Roles of region 1 current system and solar wind ram pressure

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that the region 1 current system takes on the role of providing the current and generating most of the magnetic field in the J × B force at the magnetopause that balances solar wind ram pressure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Factors controlling degree of correlation between ISEE 1 and ISEE 3 interplanetary magnetic field measurements

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the correlation variability between ISEE 1 and 3 IMF measurements and discussed the factors governing the variability, and found that the scale size of magnetic features is larger when variance is high, and abrupt changes in the correlation coefficient from poor to good or good to poor in adjacent two-hour intervals appear to be governed by the sense of change of IMF variance and vice versa.
Journal ArticleDOI

Counterstreaming electrons in magnetic clouds

TL;DR: In this paper, electron heat flux data were examined for 14 magnetic clouds detected by ISEE 3 and IMP 8 near solar maximum and 34 clouds by Wind near solar minimum, suggesting a possible solar cycle dependence on the degree of magnetic openness.
