Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic heterogeneity at the beta-giardin locus among human and animal isolates of Giardiaduodenalis and identification of potentially zoonotic subgenotypes.
TL;DR: Cysts collected in Italy from humans and animals were characterised by PCR amplification and sequencing of the beta-giardin gene, and supported the role of these animals as a source of infection for humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
The northward spread of leishmaniasis in Italy: evidence from retrospective and ongoing studies on the canine reservoir and phlebotomine vectors
Michele Maroli,Luca Rossi,Raffaella Baldelli,Gioia Capelli,Ezio Ferroglio,Claudio Genchi,Marina Gramiccia,Michele Mortarino,Mario Pietrobelli,Luigi Gradoni +9 more
TL;DR: Northern continental Italy is now focally endemic for VL and a moderate risk for human disease does exist, although the intensity of transmission seems to be lower than in traditional settings of Mediterranean VL.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vector-borne helminths of dogs and humans in Europe.
Domenico Otranto,Filipe Dantas-Torres,Filipe Dantas-Torres,Emanuele Brianti,Donato Traversa,Dušan Petrić,Claudio Genchi,Gioia Capelli +7 more
TL;DR: The reasons underlying the increasing trend in distribution of vector-borne helminths in Europe are investigated, the diagnostic and control strategies currently available are discussed and the authors’ opinion on some topics related to VBH are provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, an immunofluorescent-antibody test, and two rapid tests (immunochromatographic-dipstick and gel tests) for serological diagnosis of symptomatic and asymptomatic Leishmania infections in dogs.
TL;DR: ELISAs based on soluble promastigotes or amastigote antigens seem to be most suited for the serological diagnosis of canine Leishmania infections in both symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs.
Journal ArticleDOI
The influence of flotation solution, sample dilution and the choice of McMaster slide area (volume) on the reliability of the McMaster technique in estimating the faecal egg counts of gastrointestinal strongyles and Dicrocoelium dendriticum in sheep
TL;DR: The findings of the present study show that the highest reliability of the McMaster technique for estimating faecal egg counts in faeces from pastured sheep is obtained when using flotation solutions based on sucrose for GI strongyles, and potassium iodomercurate for D. dendriticum.
