Journal ArticleDOI

Lignins: Natural polymers from oxidative coupling of 4-hydroxyphenyl- propanoids

TL;DR: A recent challenge to the currently accepted theory of chemically controlled lignification, attempting to bring lignin into line with more organized biopolymers such as proteins, is logically inconsistent with the most basic details of the structure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Inhibition of human aromatase by mammalian lignans and isoflavonoid phytoestrogens

TL;DR: It is suggested that the high concentration of lignans in vegetarians, by inhibiting aromatase in peripheral and/or cancer cells and lowering estrogen levels, may play a protective role as antipromotional compounds during growth of estrogen-dependent cancers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Determination of urinary lignans and phytoestrogen metabolites, potential antiestrogens and anticarcinogens, in urine of women on various habitual diets

TL;DR: The evidence obtained until now seems to justify the conclusion that these compounds may be among the dietary factors affording protection against hormone-dependent cancers in vegetarians and semivegetarians.
Journal ArticleDOI

Quantitative determination of lignans and isoflavonoids in plasma of omnivorous and vegetarian women by isotope dilution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

TL;DR: It is concluded that a highly specific method for the assay of 3 lignans and 4 is oflavonoids in plasma has been developed and will be useful in future studies of lignan and isoflavonoid metabolism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dibenzodioxocins; a novel type of linkage in softwood lignins

TL;DR: Correlation peaks found in HMQC spectra of softwood lignins have been assigned to a dibenzodioxocin structure with the aid of model compounds.
