Cross Validation of Spaceborne Radar and Ground Polarimetric Radar Aided by Polarimetric Echo Classification of Hydrometeor Types
Yixin Wen,Yang Hong,Guifu Zhang,Terry J. Schuur,Terry J. Schuur,Jonathan J. Gourley,Z. Flamig,Z. Flamig,K. Robert Morris,Qing Cao +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare and resolve discrepancies in hydrometeor retrievals and reflectivity observations between the NOAA/National Severe Storm Laboratory (NSL) KOUN polarimetric weather surveillance radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) and the spaceborne precipitation radar (PR) on board NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) platform.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incorporating NASA Spaceborne Radar Data into NOAA National Mosaic QPE System for Improved Precipitation Measurement: A Physically Based VPR Identification and Enhancement Method
Yixin Wen,Qing Cao,Pierre-Emmanuel Kirstetter,Yang Hong,Jonathan J. Gourley,Jian Zhang,Guifu Zhang,Bin Yong +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) was identified and corrected by using Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar (PR) measurements in the region of Arizona and southern California, where the ground-based NEXRAD finds difficulties in making reliable estimations of surface precipitation amounts because of complex terrain and limited radar coverage.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Variational Approach for Retrieving Raindrop Size Distribution from Polarimetric Radar Measurements in the Presence of Attenuation
Qing Cao,Guifu Zhang,Ming Xue +2 more
TL;DR: A two-dimensional variational approach to retrieving raindrop size distributions (DSDs) from polarimetric radar data in the presence of attenuation is presented, using the constrained-gamma model to represent rain DSDs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Towards the Next Generation Operational Meteorological Radar
Mark E. Weber,Kurt Hondl,Nusrat Yussouf,Youngsun Jung,Derek R. Stratman,Bryan J. Putnam,Xuguang Wang,Terry J. Schuur,Charles M. Kuster,Yixin Wen,Juanzhen Sun,Jeff Keeler,Zhuming Ying,John Y. N. Cho,James M. Kurdzo,Sebastián M. Torres,Christopher D. Curtis,David Schvartzman,Jami Boettcher,Feng Nai,Henry G. Thomas,Dusan Zrnic,Igor R. Ivic,Djordje Mirkovic,Caleb Fulton,Jorge L. Salazar,Guifu Zhang,Robert D. Palmer,Mark Yeary,Kevin Cooley,Michael Istok,Mark Vincent +31 more
TL;DR: In this article, a research-to-operations (R2O) strategy for the polarimetric phased-array radar (PAR) alternative for the WSR-88D replacement network is presented.
