Understanding the Epidemiology and Progression of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Guillermo J. Pons-Estel,Graciela S. Alarcón,Lacie Scofield,Lacie Scofield,Leslie Reinlib,Glinda S. Cooper,Glinda S. Cooper +6 more
TL;DR: The understanding of ways to improve outcomes in SLE patients could benefit from patient-oriented research focusing on many dimensions of disease burden, and promising research initiatives include the inclusion of community-based patients in longitudinal studies, and use of self-assessment tools for rating disease damage and activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS): descriptive analysis of a series of 280 patients from the "CAPS Registry".
Ricard Cervera,Silvia Bucciarelli,Miguel A. Plasín,José A. Gómez-Puerta,Joan Plaza,Guillermo J. Pons-Estel,Yehuda Shoenfeld,Miguel Ingelmo,Gerard Espinos +8 more
TL;DR: The catastrophic APS is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition that needs high clinical awareness and the therapeutical connotation is that this may be corrected with the combination of anticoagulation plus steroids plus attempts at achieving a prompt reduction of antiphospholipid antibody titer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Estimated Frequency of Antiphospholipid Antibodies in Patients With Pregnancy Morbidity, Stroke, Myocardial Infarction, and Deep Vein Thrombosis: A Critical Review of the Literature
Laura Andreoli,Cecilia Beatrice Chighizola,Alessandra Banzato,Guillermo J. Pons-Estel,Guilherme Ramire de Jesus,Doruk Erkan +5 more
TL;DR: One of the first needs of APS ACTION was to know the true aPL frequency in patients with pregnancy morbidity, stroke, myocardial infarction, and deep venous thrombosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protective effect of hydroxychloroquine on renal damage in patients with lupus nephritis: LXV, data from a multiethnic US cohort.
Guillermo J. Pons-Estel,Graciela S. Alarcón,Gerald McGwin,Maria I. Danila,Jie Zhang,Holly M. Bastian,John D. Reveille,Luis M. Vilá +7 more
TL;DR: After adjusting for possible confounding factors, the protective effect of hydroxychloroquine in retarding renal damage occurrence in systemic lupus erythematosus is still evident.
Journal ArticleDOI
Renal damage is the most important predictor of mortality within the damage index: data from LUMINA LXIV, a multiethnic US cohort
Maria I. Danila,Guillermo J. Pons-Estel,Jie Zhang,Luis M. Vilá,John D. Reveille,Graciela S. Alarcón +5 more
TL;DR: The renal domain of the damage index is associated with a shorter time to death when poverty is removed from the model, and Preventing renal damage in lupus patients has long-term prognostic implications.
