I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Ti Beta 21S alloy is a metastable Ti Beta alloy commonly used in the aerospace industry, especially in jet engines. Components made from this alloy are usually subjected to various thermal histories during service, which leads to significant changes in their microstructures and associated mechanical properties. The central goal of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of correlating the optical images of the microstructure obtained from heat-treated samples of Ti Beta 21S to their respective Vickers hardness measurements using recently established analyses and statistical quantification approaches based on the principal components of the rotationally invariant 2-point spatial correlations. The correlations extracted in this work can be used for non-destructive diagnostics of in-service components.

Reduced-Order Models Correlating Ti Beta 21S Microstructures and Vickers Hardness Measurements

Recently, the analysis and prototyping of biologically inspired adhesive pads have been the subject of growing interest. Similar to biological counterparts, these synthetic adhesives consist of rafts of tiny protruding fibers. The adhesion performance of these micro-engineered products is highly dependent on the geometrical and mechanical properties of the micro-fibers and the surface they adhere to. Small fluctuations in these parameters can drastically change their adhesion performance. In this investigation, a comprehensive mathematical model of a single micro-fiber with adhesion capability in contact with an uneven surface has been developed and the behavior of the model studied. To provide more realistic results, this analytical model could be extended to an array of micro-fibers. Thus, in a further step, using a Monte Carlo simulation, we studied an array of these micro-fibers under more realistic conditions with several degrees of uncertainty. Sol Gel Processing of Iron(III) Oxides Decorated Carbon Nanotubes

Titanium alloys have very attractive properties, which are highly dependent on the material microstructure. Accurately predicting the microstructure of such materials during processing for materials design is, therefore, very important. In this study, texture evolution of titanium alloys cold rolled at room temperature and hot rolled at 260 °C is simulated using a processing path model. Texture coefficients, a set of weights in spherical harmonics expansion of texture, are utilized as descriptors of materials to represent the texture state of polycrystalline materials during processing. This model is based on the conservation principle in the orientation space. Deriving from experimental texture input at different deformation stages, the texture evolution matrix was calculated. This matrix is used to predict texture evolution for the specified deformation mode. The simulated texture evolution results agree well with experimental results.
