Journal ArticleDOI
Prevention of dementia in randomised double-blind placebo-controlled Systolic Hypertension in Europe (Syst-Eur) trial.
Françoise Forette,M.L. Seux,Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,Willem H. Birkenhäger,M.-R. Babarskiene,Speranta Babeanu,A. Bossini,Blas Gil-Extremera,Xavier Girerd,Tovio Laks,Emil Lilov,Valentine Moisseyev,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hannu Vanhanen,John Webster,Yair Yodfat,Robert Fagard +17 more
TL;DR: In elderly people with isolated systolic hypertension, antihypertensive treatment was associated with a lower incidence of dementia and if 1000 hypertensive patients were treated with anti Hypertensive drugs for 5 years 19 cases of dementia might be prevented.
Journal ArticleDOI
The prevention of dementia with antihypertensive treatment: new evidence from the Systolic Hypertension in Europe (Syst-Eur) study.
Françoise Forette,M.L. Seux,Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,M.-R. Babarskiene,Speranta Babeanu,A. Bossini,Robert Fagard,Blas Gil-Extremera,Tovio Laks,Zhanna Kobalava,Cinzia Sarti,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hannu Vanhanen,John Webster,Yair Yodfat,Willem H. Birkenhäger +16 more
TL;DR: The extended follow-up of Syst-Eur patients reinforces the evidence that blood pressure–lowering therapy initiated with a long-acting dihydropyridine protects against dementia in older patients with systolic hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduction of serum cholesterol with sitostanol-ester margarine in a mildly hypercholesterolemic population
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors tested the tolerability and cholesterol-lowering effect of margarine containing sitostanol ester in a population with mild hypercholesterolemia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Response to Antihypertensive Therapy in Older Patients With Sustained and Nonsustained Systolic Hypertension
Robert Fagard,Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,Jerzy Gasowski,Christopher J. Bulpitt,Denis Clement,Peter W. de Leeuw,Jurij Dobovisek,Matti Jääskivi,Gastone Leonetti,Eoin O'Brien,Paolo Palatini,Gianfranco Parati,Jose L. Rodicio,Hannu Vanhanen,John Webster +15 more
TL;DR: Patients with sustained hypertension had higher ECG voltages and rates of cardiovascular complications than did patients with nonsustained hypertension, and the favorable effects of active treatment on these outcomes were only statistically significant in patients with moderate sustained hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serum cholesterol, cholesterol precursors, and plant sterols in hypercholesterolemic subjects with different apoE phenotypes during dietary sitostanol ester treatment
Hannu Vanhanen,S. Blomqvist,Christian Ehnholm,M Hyvönen,Matti Jauhiainen,I Torstila,Tatu A. Miettinen +6 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that sitostanol esters dissolved in dietary fat can be recommended for treatment of modest primary hypercholesterolemia and are apparently practical and suitable for cholesterol lowering in a general population.
