Journal ArticleDOI
Prevention of dementia in randomised double-blind placebo-controlled Systolic Hypertension in Europe (Syst-Eur) trial.
Françoise Forette,M.L. Seux,Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,Willem H. Birkenhäger,M.-R. Babarskiene,Speranta Babeanu,A. Bossini,Blas Gil-Extremera,Xavier Girerd,Tovio Laks,Emil Lilov,Valentine Moisseyev,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hannu Vanhanen,John Webster,Yair Yodfat,Robert Fagard +17 more
TL;DR: In elderly people with isolated systolic hypertension, antihypertensive treatment was associated with a lower incidence of dementia and if 1000 hypertensive patients were treated with anti Hypertensive drugs for 5 years 19 cases of dementia might be prevented.
Journal ArticleDOI
The prevention of dementia with antihypertensive treatment: new evidence from the Systolic Hypertension in Europe (Syst-Eur) study.
Françoise Forette,M.L. Seux,Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,M.-R. Babarskiene,Speranta Babeanu,A. Bossini,Robert Fagard,Blas Gil-Extremera,Tovio Laks,Zhanna Kobalava,Cinzia Sarti,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hannu Vanhanen,John Webster,Yair Yodfat,Willem H. Birkenhäger +16 more
TL;DR: The extended follow-up of Syst-Eur patients reinforces the evidence that blood pressure–lowering therapy initiated with a long-acting dihydropyridine protects against dementia in older patients with systolic hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quality control of the blood pressure phenotype in the European Project on Genes in Hypertension.
Tatiana Kuznetsova,Jan A. Staessen,Kalina Kawecka-Jaszcz,Speranta Babeanu,Edoardo Casiglia,Jan Filipovsky,C Nachev,Yuri Nikitin,Peleska J,Eoin O'Brien +9 more
TL;DR: The procedures of quality assurance set up in the EPOGH study for the BP measurements resulted in a well-defined BP phenotype, which was consistent across centres, and should be planned at the design stage of a project involving BP measurement and implemented from its very beginnings until the end.
Journal ArticleDOI
Calcium channel blockade and cardiovascular prognosis in the European trial on isolated systolic hypertension
Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,Robert Fagard,Willem H. Birkenhäger,Guramy Arabidze,Speranta Babeanu,Blas Gil-Extremera,Christopher J. Bulpitt,Christopher Davidson,Peter W. de Leeuw,Aris D. Efstratopoulos,Astrid E. Fletcher,Roberto Fogari,Matti Jääskivi,Kalina Kawecka-Jaszcz,C Nachev,J C Petrie,M.L. Seux,Jaakko Tuomilehto,John Webster,Yair Yodfat +20 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that the calcium channel blocker nitrendipine, given as a single antihypertensive medication, prevents cardiovascular complications in older patients with isolated systolic hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI
Host and environmental determinants of heart rate and heart rate variability in four European populations.
Katarzyna Stolarz,Jan A. Staessen,Tatiana Kuznetsova,Valérie Tikhonoff,Doina State,Speranta Babeanu,Edoardo Casiglia,Robert Fagard,Kalina Kawecka-Jaszcz,Yuri Nikitin +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the association between heart rate and its variability (HRV), and gender, age, posture, breathing frequency, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, family history of hypertension and various lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol and coffee consumption and physical activity.
