Journal ArticleDOI
Randomised double-blind comparison of placebo and active treatment for older patients with isolated systolic hypertension *
Jan A. Staessen,Robert Fagard,Lutgarde Thijs,Hilde Celis,G G Arabidze,Willem H. Birkenhäger,Christopher J. Bulpitt,P. W. De Leeuw,Colin T. Dollery,Astrid E. Fletcher,Françoise Forette,Gastone Leonetti,C Nachev,ET O'Brien,Joseph B. Rosenfeld,Jose L. Rodicio,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Alberto Zanchetti +17 more
TL;DR: Among elderly patients with isolated systolic hypertension, antihypertensive drug treatment starting with nitrendipine reduces the rate of cardiovascular complications and may prevent 29 strokes or 53 major cardiovascular endpoints.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevention of dementia in randomised double-blind placebo-controlled Systolic Hypertension in Europe (Syst-Eur) trial.
Françoise Forette,M.L. Seux,Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,Willem H. Birkenhäger,M.-R. Babarskiene,Speranta Babeanu,A. Bossini,Blas Gil-Extremera,Xavier Girerd,Tovio Laks,Emil Lilov,Valentine Moisseyev,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hannu Vanhanen,John Webster,Yair Yodfat,Robert Fagard +17 more
TL;DR: In elderly people with isolated systolic hypertension, antihypertensive treatment was associated with a lower incidence of dementia and if 1000 hypertensive patients were treated with anti Hypertensive drugs for 5 years 19 cases of dementia might be prevented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical effects of Abeta immunization (AN1792) in patients with AD in an interrupted trial.
Sid Gilman,Martin Koller,Ronald Black,L. Jenkins,S. G. Griffith,Nick C. Fox,L. Eisner,L. C. Kirby,M. Boada Rovira,Françoise Forette,Jean-Marc Orgogozo +10 more
TL;DR: This phase IIa immunotherapy trial of AN1792(QS-21) in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer disease (AD) that was interrupted because of meningoencephalitis provides an indication that Aβ immunotherapy may be useful in Alzheimer disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Calcium-Channel Blockade in Older Patients with Diabetes and Systolic Hypertension
Jaakko Tuomilehto,Daiva Rastenyte,W. H. Birkenhäger,Lutgarde Thijs,Riitta Antikainen,Christopher J. Bulpitt,Astrid E. Fletcher,Françoise Forette,Adiv Goldhaber,Paolo Palatini,Cinzia Sarti,Robert Fagard +11 more
TL;DR: Antihypertensive treatment with the calcium-channel blocker nitrendipine reduced the risk of cardiovascular events in diabetic and nondiabetic patients and was compared with placebo in this post hoc analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
The prevention of dementia with antihypertensive treatment: new evidence from the Systolic Hypertension in Europe (Syst-Eur) study.
Françoise Forette,M.L. Seux,Jan A. Staessen,Lutgarde Thijs,M.-R. Babarskiene,Speranta Babeanu,A. Bossini,Robert Fagard,Blas Gil-Extremera,Tovio Laks,Zhanna Kobalava,Cinzia Sarti,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hannu Vanhanen,John Webster,Yair Yodfat,Willem H. Birkenhäger +16 more
TL;DR: The extended follow-up of Syst-Eur patients reinforces the evidence that blood pressure–lowering therapy initiated with a long-acting dihydropyridine protects against dementia in older patients with systolic hypertension.
