Luminescent Functional Metal–Organic Frameworks

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) display a wide range of luminescent behaviors resulting from the multifaceted nature of their structure. In this critical review we discuss the origins of MOF luminosity, which include the linker, the coordinated metal ions, antenna effects, excimer and exciplex formation, and guest molecules. The literature describing these effects is comprehensively surveyed, including a categorization of each report according to the type of luminescence observed. Finally, we discuss potential applications of luminescent MOFs. This review will be of interest to researchers and synthetic chemists attempting to design luminescent MOFs, and those engaged in the extension of MOFs to applications such as chemical, biological, and radiation detection, medical imaging, and electro-optical devices (141 references).

Luminescent Metal–Organic Frameworks

Graphene has attracted tremendous research interest in recent years, owing to its exceptional properties. The scaled-up and reliable production of graphene derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), offers a wide range of possibilities to synthesize graphene-based functional materials for various applications. This critical review presents and discusses the current development of graphene-based composites. After introduction of the synthesis methods for graphene and its derivatives as well as their properties, we focus on the description of various methods to synthesize graphene-based composites, especially those with functional polymers and inorganic nanostructures. Particular emphasis is placed on strategies for the optimization of composite properties. Lastly, the advantages of graphene-based composites in applications such as the Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, photovoltaic devices, photocatalysis, as well as Raman enhancement are described (279 references).

I read this book the same weekend that the Packers took on the Rams, and the experience of the latter event, obviously, colored my judgment. Although I abhor anything that smacks of being a handbook (like, \"How to Earn a Merit Badge in Neurosurgery\") because too many volumes in biomedical science already evince a boyscout-like approach, I must confess that parts of this volume are fast, scholarly, and significant, with certain reservations. I like parts of this well-illustrated book because Dr. Sj6strand, without so stating, develops certain subjects on technique in relation to the acquisition of judgment and sophistication. And this is important! So, given that the author (like all of us) is somewhat deficient in some areas, and biased in others, the book is still valuable if the uninitiated reader swallows it in a general fashion, realizing full well that what will be required from the reader is a modulation to fit his vision, propreception, adaptation and response, and the kind of problem he is undertaking. A major deficiency of this book is revealed by comparison of its use of physics and of chemistry to provide understanding and background for the application of high resolution electron microscopy to problems in biology. Since the volume is keyed to high resolution electron microscopy, which is a sophisticated form of structural analysis, but really morphology in a modern guise, the physical and mechanical background of The instrument and its ancillary tools are simply and well presented. The potential use of chemical or cytochemical information as it relates to biological fine structure , however, is quite deficient. I wonder when even sophisticated morphol-ogists will consider fixation a reaction and not a technique; only then will the fundamentals become self-evident and predictable and this sine qua flon will become less mystical. Staining reactions (the most inadequate chapter) ought to be something more than a technique to selectively enhance contrast of morphological elements; it ought to give the structural addresses of some of the chemical residents of cell components. Is it pertinent that auto-radiography gets singled out for more complete coverage than other significant aspects of cytochemistry by a high resolution microscopist, when it has a built-in minimal error of 1,000 A in standard practice? I don't mean to blind-side (in strict football terminology) Dr. Sj6strand's efforts for what is \"routinely used in our laboratory\"; what is done is usually well done. It's just that …

The final years of the 20th century were characterised by the emergence of new sociodemographic profiles in which behaviour-related diseases were increasingly prominent. Societies have now recognised the fundamental role that health-related behaviours – e.g., diet, tobacco consumption and physical activity – play in human health and chronic disease risk. Everywhere, modern societies are becoming more and more sedentary, a trend contributing to the rise in rates of chronic and degenerative diseases such as type 2 diabetes, CVD, hypertension, some types of cancer, musculoskeletal diseases and high blood pressure and cholesterol. Moreover, it appears that sedentary lifestyles also cause a decline in psychological well-being, thereby increasing the risk of mental disorders (Nusselder et al. 2008).

Biomimetic Graphene/Spongin Scaffolds for Improved Osteoblasts Bioactivity via Dynamic Mechanical Stimulation

A new organic-inorganic hybrid cobalt(II)-molybdenum(V) phosphate polymer incorporating piperazine (pip) (H{sub 2}pip){sub 3}[Co{sub 3}Mo{sub 12}O{sub 24}(OH){sub 6}(PO{sub 4}){sub 8}(H{sub 1.5}pip){sub 4}].5(H{sub 2}O), was prepared under hydrothermal conditions. As revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, the material is modular, built from a secondary building block composed of two anionic hexameric polyoxomolybdophosphate [Mo{sub 6}O{sub 12}(OH){sub 3}(PO{sub 4}){sub 4}]{sup 9-} moieties, bridged by a central octahedral Co{sup 2+} centre. The sandwich-type {l_brace}Co[Mo{sub 6}O{sub 12}(OH){sub 3}(PO{sub 4}){sub 4}]{sub 2}{r_brace}{sup 16-} dimers are connected via tetrahedral Co{sup 2+} metal centres, forming an infinite one-dimensional polymer. The compound constitutes the first example of a reduced sandwich-type cobalt-molybdenum phosphate in which the organic moiety (pip) is effectively coordinated to the inorganic backbone of the polymer, in this case via the tetrahedrally coordinated Co{sup 2+} centres. The magnetic behaviour of this material was investigated in the temperature range 4-298 K.
