Theory of fuzzy integrals and its applications

In the current era of sustainable development, energy planning has become complex due to the involvement of multiple benchmarks like technical, social, economic and environmental. This in turn puts major constraints for decision makers to optimize energy alternatives independently and discretely especially in case of rural communities. In addition, topographical limitations concerning renewable energy systems which are mostly distributed in nature, the energy planning becomes more complicated. In such cases, decision analysis plays a vital role for designing such systems by considering various criteria and objectives even at disintegrated levels of electrification. Multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) is a branch of operational research dealing with finding optimal results in complex scenarios including various indicators, conflicting objectives and criteria. This tool is becoming popular in the field of energy planning due to the flexibility it provides to the decision makers to take decisions while considering all the criteria and objectives simultaneously. This article develops an insight into various MCDM techniques, progress made by considering renewable energy applications over MCDM methods and future prospects in this area. An extensive review in the sphere of sustainable energy has been performed by utilizing MCDM technique.

A review of multi criteria decision making (MCDM) towards sustainable renewable energy development

Two decades was systematically reviewed on fuzzy MCDM techniques from 1994 to 2014.The database for review was 403 papers from more than 150 high-ranking journals.403 scholarly papers were grouped in four different main fields.Papers were classified based on utilizing, developing and proposing research papers. MCDM is considered as a complex decision-making tool involving both quantitative and qualitative factors. In recent years, several fuzzy FMCDM tools have been suggested to choosing the optimal probably options. The purpose of this paper is to review systematically the applications and methodologies of the fuzzy multi decision-making (FMCDM) techniques. This study reviewed a total of 403 papers published from 1994 to 2014 in more than 150 peer reviewed journals (extracted from online databases such as ScienceDirect, Springer, Emerald, Wiley, ProQuest, and Taylor & Francis). According to experts' opinions, these papers were grouped into four main fields: engineering, management and business, science, and technology. Furthermore, these papers were categorized based on authors, publication date, country of origin, methods, tools, and type of research (FMCDM utilizing research, FMCDM developing research, and FMCDM proposing research). The results of this study indicated that, in 2013, scholars have published papers more than other years. In addition, hybrid fuzzy MCDM in the integrated method and fuzzy AHP in the individual section were ranked as the first and second methods in use. Additionally, Taiwan was ranked as the first country that contributed to this survey, and engineering was ranked as the first field that has applied fuzzy DM tools and techniques.

Multiple criteria decision-making techniques and their applications – a review of the literature from 2000 to 2014

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a risk assessment tool that mitigates potential failures in systems, processes, designs or services and has been used in a wide range of industries. The conventional risk priority number (RPN) method has been criticized to have many deficiencies and various risk priority models have been proposed in the literature to enhance the performance of FMEA. However, there has been no literature review on this topic. In this study, we reviewed 75 FMEA papers published between 1992 and 2012 in the international journals and categorized them according to the approaches used to overcome the limitations of the conventional RPN method. The intention of this review is to address the following three questions: (i) Which shortcomings attract the most attention? (ii) Which approaches are the most popular? (iii) Is there any inadequacy of the approaches? The answers to these questions will give an indication of current trends in research and the best direction for future research in order to further address the known deficiencies associated with the traditional FMEA.

Review: Risk evaluation approaches in failure mode and effects analysis: A literature review

Decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is considered as an effective method for the identification of cause-effect chain components of a complex system. It deals with evaluating interdependent relationships among factors and finding the critical ones through a visual structural model. Over the recent decade, a large number of studies have been done on the application of DEMATEL and many different variants have been put forward in the literature. The objective of this study is to review systematically the methodologies and applications of the DEMATEL technique. We reviewed a total of 346 papers published from 2006 to 2016 in the international journals. According to the approaches used, these publications are grouped into five categories: classical DEMATEL, fuzzy DEMATEL, grey DEMATEL, analytical network process- (ANP-) DEMATEL, and other DEMATEL. All papers with respect to each category are summarized and analyzed, pointing out their implementing procedures, real applications, and crucial findings. This systematic and comprehensive review holds valuable insights for researchers and practitioners into using the DEMATEL in terms of indicating current research trends and potential directions for further research.

DEMATEL Technique: A Systematic Review of the State-of-the-Art Literature on Methodologies and Applications

A novel FMEA approach is proposed using combination weighting and fuzzy VIKOR.Combination of fuzzy AHP and entropy method is applied for risk factor weighting.Fuzzy VIKOR method is used to determine the risk priorities of failure modes.An empirical example is offered to illustrate the effectiveness of the new method. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is one of the most popular reliability analysis tools for identifying, assessing and eliminating potential failure modes in a wide range of industries. In general, failure modes in FMEA are evaluated and ranked through the risk priority number (RPN), which is obtained by the multiplication of crisp values of the risk factors, such as the occurrence (O), severity (S), and detection (D) of each failure mode. However, the conventional RPN method has been considerably criticized for various reasons. To deal with the uncertainty and vagueness from humans' subjective perception and experience in risk evaluation process, this paper presents a novel approach for FMEA based on combination weighting and fuzzy VIKOR method. Integration of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy method is applied for risk factor weighting in this proposed approach. The risk priorities of the identified failure modes are obtained through next steps based on fuzzy VIKOR method. To demonstrate its potential applications, the new fuzzy FMEA is used for analyzing the risk of general anesthesia process. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is carried out to verify the robustness of the risk ranking and a comparison analysis is conducted to show the advantages of the proposed FMEA approach.

A novel approach for failure mode and effects analysis using combination weighting and fuzzy VIKOR method

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a methodology to evaluate a system, design, process or service for possible ways in which failures (problems, errors, etc.) can occur. The two most important issues of FMEA are the acquirement of FMEA team members' diversity opinions and the determination of risk priorities of the failure modes that have been identified. First, the FMEA team often demonstrates different opinions and knowledge from one team member to another and produces different types of assessment information because of its cross-functional and multidisciplinary nature. These different types of information are very hard to incorporate into the FMEA by the traditional model and fuzzy logic approach. Second, the traditional FMEA determines the risk priorities of failure modes using the risk priority numbers (RPNs) by multiplying the scores of the risk factors like the occurrence (O), severity (S) and detection (D) of each failure mode. The method has been criticized to have several shortcomings. In this paper, we present an FMEA using the fuzzy evidential reasoning (FER) approach and grey theory to solve the two problems and improve the effectiveness of the traditional FMEA. As is illustrated by the numerical example, the proposed FMEA can well capture FMEA team members' diversity opinions and prioritize failure modes under different types of uncertainties.
