Abstract: Objective To study the expression and significance of vascular endothelial growth factor/vascular permeability factor (VEGF/VPF) and transforming growth factor-beta 1(TGF-beta 1) in nasal polyps. Methods Expression of VEGF/VPF and TGF-beta 1 in nasal polyps from 34 patients and middle turbinates from 30 patients with deviation of nasal septum was prospectively studied with immunohistochemistry. Tissue sections were observed under optical microscope. Results (1) The VEGF/VPF positivity in vascular endothelium and in glandular cell was significantly higher in nasal polyps than in middle turbinates (P 0.05). Conclusion (1) The VEGF/VPF may play a key role in the formation of heavy edema of nasal polyps; (2) The TGF-beta 1 may contribute to some of the pathologic changes observed in nasal polyps, such as thickening of the epithelial basement membrane and stromal fibrosis; (3) Eosinophils in nasal polyps represent a major source of TGF-beta 1.

Abstract: Objective To estimate the roles of CD 43 , CD 20 and total IgE in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps. Method Twenty-six cases of nasal polyps and 20 cases of mucosa of middle turbinates were used in present study. Results The number of CD + 43 cells,CD + 20 cells and plasma cells in nasal polyps were significantly more than that in middle turbinates (P0.01). The positive rate of local IgE + cells in nasal polyps was significantly higher than in middle turbinate (P0.01). Conclusion There were active cellular immunity and humoral immunity in nasal polyps. Local allergy may play a role in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps.

METHOD Expression of TGF-beta 1 in nasal polyps from 34 patients and middle turbinates from 30 patients with deviation of nasal septum were prospectively studied with immunohistochemistry. Each tissue section was observed under optical microscope. RESULT 1. The TGF-beta 1 positivity in extracellular matrix and in cells in the stroma was significantly higher in nasal polyps than in middle turbinates (P 0.05), eosinophil infiltration correlated significantly with clinical type of nasal polyps(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION 1. The TGF-beta 1 may contribute to some of the pathologic changes observed in nasal polyps, such as thickening of the epithelial basement membrane and stromal fibrosis. 2. Eosinophils in nasal polyps represent a major source of TGF-beta 1. 3. Eosinophils infiltration may play a prominent role in the development and recurrence of nasal polyps.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To evaluate the values of pulmonary function assay and dynamic pulmonary perfusion imaging with technetium labeled macroaggregated albumin ((99m)TcMAA) in the early diagnosis of hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS). METHODS The pulmonary function assay and (99m)TcMAA scans were performed in 28 patients with HPS, 30 cirrhotic patients (CP) without HPS, and 21 healthy controls (HC). RESULTS In the patients with HPS, PaO(2), SaO(2) and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide of lungs (DLco) was significantly lower than that in CP (P<0.01) and HC (P<0.01), and alveolar-arterial gradient [P((A-a))O(2)] was significantly increased (P<0.001). Results from (99m)TcMAA scans showed that the radionuclides were distributed over the spleen, kidney, liver and brain, and the ratios of arterivenous shunt were significantly higher than that in CP (P<0.001) and NC (P<0.001). In cirrhotic patients, DLco significantly decreased (P<0.05), P((A-a))O(2) and shunt ratios increased (P<0.01 and 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Pulmonary function assay and dynamic pulmonary perfusion imaging with (99m)TcMAA are sensitive methods for diagnosis of the early HPS.

Abstract: Sinorhizobium fredii 042BS was isolated from root nodules of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) from Xinjiang Region. Nodulation experiments showed that both soybean and alfalfa were nodulated by 042BS effectively. The 16S rDNA PCR-RFLP analysis was carried out by four restriction endonucleases, and the restriction maps of strain 042BS were identical with those of S. fredii USDA205. The DNA G + C mol% of strain 042BS was 60.0. The DNA homology between 042BS and S. fredii USDA205 and USDA191 were 84.9% and 89.6%, respectively. To prove the capability of 042BS to nodulate both soybean and alfalfa, constitutively expressed green fluorescence protein gene(gfp) was introduced to 042BS, and the recombinant strain 042BSG was obtained. The reisolates from nodules of the soybean and alfalfa inoculated with 042BSG were observed using the confocal laser-scanning microscope, and the expressions of gfp were detected, respectively. 042BS showed various nodulation capacities with different alfalfa cultivars used.

Abstract: In this paper, 5,5’ -bis [4’- methyl- ( 2,2’- bipyridin- 4- yl)- ethyl ]- 2,2’- bipyridine (BMBPYBPY), a partially conjugated derivative of oligobipyridine, has been synthesized and found to show strong photoluminescence (PL). Compared with the pyridine-based conjugated polymers, the shortened conjugation length shifts the emission color from green to violet-blue. The effects of morphology on its PL properties have been studied. From its as-precipitated powder state, an emission peak at 418 nm can be observed. However the emission spectra from its diffused states such as doped in KBr, or dissolved in CHCl3, as well as from its amorphous film state fabricated by vacuum evaporation are more complex. Also carried out are preliminary electroluminescent studies. Single layer devices ITO/BMBPYBPY/Al do not emit although current can be observed prominently. Double layer devices ITO/TPD/ BMBPYBPY/Al show emissions both from TPD and BMBPYBPY.
