Characterization of Ni-rich hexagonal birnessite and its geochemical effects on aqueous Pb2+/Zn2+ and As(III)
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of Ni doping on the substructure and physicochemical properties of hexagonal birnessite and Ni crystal chemistry in birnessites were investigated and the results indicated that incorporation of Ni into the natural Birnessite in ferromanganese nodules may be achieved both by direct coprecipitation with Mn to build the layers and migration over time from adsorbed Ni on the surface into the layer structure.

TL;DR: It is suggested that in heavy-metal-polluted weathered soils in tropical and subtropical areas enriched with iron oxides, it is essential to assess potential bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals bound to well-crystallized iron oxyhydroxides with appropriate procedures in the fractionation measurement.
