Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence, incidence, and mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 in rural South Africa
Nigel Rollins,Nigel Rollins,Martin Dedicoat,Siva Danaviah,Taryn Page,Karen S. Bishop,Immo Kleinschmidt,Hoosen M. Coovadia,S.A. Cassol +8 more
TL;DR: The blood-spot approach is an effective method for surveillance of HIV-1 in women and children, and for early identification of incidence of this infection in women of child-bearing age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased risks of malaria due to limited residual life of insecticide and outdoor biting versus protection by combined use of nets and indoor residual spraying on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea
John S. Bradley,Abrahan Matias,Christopher Schwabe,Daniel Vargas,Feliciano Monti,Gloria Nseng,Immo Kleinschmidt +6 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the epidemiological impact of reduced mosquito mortality with time since IRS, and underscores that in settings of year-round transmission there is a compelling need for longer-lasting IRS insecticides, but that in the interim, high coverage of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) may ameliorate the loss of effect of current shorter-lasting IRC insecticides.
Journal ArticleDOI
Malaria Risk Factors in North West Tanzania: The Effect of Spraying, Nets and Wealth
Philippa A. West,Natacha Protopopoff,Mark Rowland,Emma Cumming,Alison Rand,Chris Drakeley,Alexandra Wright,Zuhura Kivaju,Matthew J. Kirby,Franklin W. Mosha,William Kisinza,Immo Kleinschmidt +11 more
TL;DR: High malaria prevalence in some clusters and the limited protection given by pyrethroid IRS and LLINs suggest that it may be necessary to enhance established vector control activities and consider additional interventions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Getting antimalarials on target: impact of national roll-out of malaria rapid diagnostic tests on health facility treatment in three regions of Tanzania
Katia Bruxvoort,Katia Bruxvoort,Admirabilis Kalolella,H Nchimbi,Charles Festo,Mark Taylor,Mark Taylor,Rebecca Thomson,Rebecca Thomson,Matthew Cairns,Julie Thwing,Immo Kleinschmidt,Catherine Goodman,S. Patrick Kachur +13 more
TL;DR: To evaluate the impact on case management practices of routine government implementation of mRDTs, large‐scale health facility surveys in three regions of Tanzania before and after mR DT roll‐out were conducted.
Journal ArticleDOI
El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and annual malaria incidence in Southern Africa
TL;DR: There remains a need for quantitative studies that at the same time consider both ENSO-driven climate anomalies and non-ENSO factors influencing epidemic risk potential to assess their relative importance in order to provide an empirical basis for malaria epidemic forecasting models.
