TL;DR: The RTS,S/AS01 vaccine provided protection against both clinical and severe malaria in African children, and serious adverse events occurred with a similar frequency in the two study groups.

TL;DR: The RTS,S/AS01 vaccine coadministered with EPI vaccines provided modest protection against both clinical and severe malaria in young infants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Overdiagnosis of malaria in patients with severe febrile illness in Tanzania: a prospective study
Hugh Reyburn,Redepmta Mbatia,Chris Drakeley,Ilona Carneiro,Emmanuel Mwakasungula,Ombeni Mwerinde,Kapalala Saganda,John F. Shao,Andrew Y Kitua,Raimos Olomi,Brian Greenwood,Christopher J. M. Whitty +11 more
TL;DR: In Tanzania, malaria is commonly overdiagnosed in people presenting with severe febrile illness, especially in those living in areas with low to moderate transmission and in adults, with a failure to treat alternative causes of severe infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Epidemiology and Infectivity of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax Gametocytes in Relation to Malaria Control and Elimination
Teun Bousema,Chris Drakeley +1 more
TL;DR: How control measures that aim to reduce malaria transmission, such as mass drug administration and a transmission-blocking vaccine, might better be deployed are drawn together to show how the application of molecular techniques has led to the identification of submicroscopic gametocyte carriage and to a reassessment of the human infectious reservoir.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased proportions of outdoor feeding among residual malaria vector populations following increased use of insecticide-treated nets in rural Tanzania.
Tanya L. Russell,Tanya L. Russell,Tanya L. Russell,Nicodem J. Govella,Nicodem J. Govella,Salum Azizi,Chris Drakeley,S. Patrick Kachur,Gerry F. Killeen,Gerry F. Killeen +9 more
TL;DR: High usage of ITNs can dramatically alter African vector populations so that intense, predominantly indoor transmission is replaced by greatly lowered residual transmission, a greater proportion of which occurs outdoors.
