Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhosis: incidence and risk factors.
TL;DR: Further studies are needed to investigate other viral factors (eg, HBV genotype/mutant, occult HBV, HIV coinfection) and preventable or treatable comorbidities ( eg, obesity, diabetes) in the HCC risk in cirrhosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of hepatitis delta virus infection on morbidity and mortality in compensated cirrhosis type B
Giovanna Fattovich,Giuliano Giustina,Erik Christensen,M. Pantalena,Irene Zagni,Giuseppe Realdi,Solko W. Schalm +6 more
TL;DR: HDV infection increases the risk for HCC threefold and for mortality twofold in patients with cirrhosis type B.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of hepatitis B and C virus infections on the natural history of compensated cirrhosis: a cohort study of 297 patients.
Giovanna Fattovich,M. Pantalena,Irene Zagni,Giuseppe Realdi,Solko W. Schalm,Erik Christensen +5 more
TL;DR: Patients with HBV infection may present with cirrhosis about 10 yr earlier than those with HCV infection, and survival shows no significant differences according to HBV or HCV etiology in Western European cirrhotic patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatitis C virus genotypes: distribution and clinical significance in patients with cirrhosis type C seen at tertiary referral centres in Europe
Giovanna Fattovich,Maria Lisa Ribero,M. Pantalena,G. Diodati,Piero Luigi Almasio,Frederik Nevens,Federico Tremolada,Françoise Degos,J. Rai,Antonio Solinas,Domenico Mura,A. Tocco,Irene Zagni,F. Fabris,L. Lomonaco,Franco Noventa,Giuseppe Realdi,Solko W. Schalm,Alessandro Tagger +18 more
TL;DR: Type 1b and, to a lesser extent, type 2, are the most common HCV genotypes in European patients with cirrhosis, and HCV type 1b is not associated with a greater risk for HCC, but increases the risk for decompensation by threefold in patients with Cirrhosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Original contributionEffect of hepatitis B and C virus infections on the natural history of compensated cirrhosis: a cohort study of 297 patients
Giovanna Fattovich,M. Pantalena,Irene Zagni,Giuseppe Realdi,Solko W. Schalm,Erik Christensen +5 more
TL;DR: Patients with HBV infection may present with cirrhosis about 10 yr earlier than those with HCV infection, andHCV infection tends to be associated with a higher risk of decompensation, but these data should take into consideration the heterogeneity of HBV-related Cirrhosis.
