Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Lanthanide single-molecule magnets.

Sterically encumbered Lewis acid and Lewis base combinations do not undergo the ubiquitous neutralization reaction to form "classical" Lewis acid/Lewis base adducts. Rather, both the unquenched Lewis acidity and basicity of such sterically "frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs)" is available to carry out unusual reactions. Typical examples of frustrated Lewis pairs are inter- or intramolecular combinations of bulky phosphines or amines with strongly electrophilic RB(C(6)F(5))(2) components. Many examples of such frustrated Lewis pairs are able to cleave dihydrogen heterolytically. The resulting H(+)/H(-) pairs (stabilized for example, in the form of the respective phosphonium cation/hydridoborate anion salts) serve as active metal-free catalysts for the hydrogenation of, for example, bulky imines, enamines, or enol ethers. Frustrated Lewis pairs also react with alkenes, aldehydes, and a variety of other small molecules, including carbon dioxide, in cooperative three-component reactions, offering new strategies for synthetic chemistry.

Frustrated Lewis pairs: metal-free hydrogen activation and more.

Jaguar is an ab initio quantum chemical program that specializes in fast electronic structure predictions for molecular systems of medium and large size. Jaguar focuses on computational methods with reasonable computational scaling with the size of the system, such as density functional theory (DFT) and local second-order Moller–Plesset perturbation theory. The favorable scaling of the methods and the high efficiency of the program make it possible to conduct routine computations involving several thousand molecular orbitals. This performance is achieved through a utilization of the pseudospectral approximation and several levels of parallelization. The speed advantages are beneficial for applying Jaguar in biomolecular computational modeling. Additionally, owing to its superior wave function guess for transition-metal-containing systems, Jaguar finds applications in inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry. The emphasis on larger systems and transition metal elements paves the way toward developing Jaguar for its use in materials science modeling. The article describes the historical and new features of Jaguar, such as improved parallelization of many modules, innovations in ab initio pKa prediction, and new semiempirical corrections for nondynamic correlation errors in DFT. Jaguar applications in drug discovery, materials science, force field parameterization, and other areas of computational research are reviewed. Timing benchmarks and other results obtained from the most recent Jaguar code are provided. The article concludes with a discussion of challenges and directions for future development of the program. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Jaguar: A high-performance quantum chemistry software program with strengths in life and materials sciences

The inhibition activity of a series of anticancer metal complexes based on platinum, ruthenium, and gold metal ions was evaluated on the zinc-finger protein PARP-1, either purified or directly on protein extracts from human breast cancer MCF7 cells. Information on the reactivity of the metal complexes with the PARP-1 zinc-finger domain was obtained by high-resolution ESI FT-ICR mass spectrometry. An excellent correlation between PARP-1 inhibition in protein extracts and the ability of the complexes to bind to the zinc-finger motif (in competition with zinc) was established. The results support a model whereby displacement of zinc from the PARP-1 zinc finger by other metal ions leads to decreased PARP-1 activity. In vitro combination studies of cisplatin with NAMI-A and RAPTA-T on different cancer cell lines (MCF7, A2780, and A2780cisR) showed that, in some cases, a synergistic effect is in operation.

Metal-based inhibition of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase - the guardian angel of DNA.

The addition of 2,2′-bipyridine to [U(TpMe2)2I] (1) results in the displacement of the iodide and the formation of the cationic uranium(III) complex [U(TpMe2)2(bipy)]I (2). This compound was isolated as a dark-green solid in good yield and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies, and its molecular structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Studies of its magnetic properties revealed a frequency dependence of magnetization with a blocking temperature of 4.5 K and, at lower temperatures, a slow relaxation of magnetization with an energy barrier of 18.2 cm–1, characteristic of single-molecule-magnet behavior.

[U(Tp(Me2))2(bipy)]+: a cationic uranium(III) complex with single-molecule-magnet behavior.

In developed countries, cancer is the second leading cause of death, being only surpassed by cardiovascular diseases. To develop tumor-targeted tools to localize and treat cancer at an early stage is a multidisciplinary area fuelled by the convergence of biology, medicine, chemistry, physics and engineering. Chemists, in particular, play a critical role in this effort, as they are continuously challenged to use innovative chemical strategies to develop ‘smart drugs’. The in vitro observation that peptide receptors are overexpressed in certain tumors, as compared to endogenous expression levels, has prompted the use of such receptors as targets and the design of radiolabelled peptide-based tools for targeted nuclear molecular imaging and therapy. Such approach has gained increased interest over the last two decades, driven in particular by the success of OctreoScan® and by the increasing knowledge concerning overexpression of regulatory peptide receptors in tumor tissues. Selected peptides that target a variety of disease related receptors are in place and have been labeled with different radiometals, using mainly the bifunctional approach. This review begins by summarizing some relevant aspects of the coordination chemistry of the metals studied for labeling peptides. Then, we provide an overview of the chemical strategies explored to improve the biological performance of different families of radiometallated peptides for nuclear molecular imaging and/or targeted radionuclide tumor therapy.

Radiometallated peptides for molecular imaging and targeted therapy

Enhanced receptor selectivity: carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are relevant for both cancer diagnosis and therapy. Combining non-radioactive Re compounds with their radioactive (99m)Tc homologs enables the use of identical molecules for therapy and imaging (theragnostic). The syntheses and in vitro evaluation of [(Cp-R)M(CO)(3)] (Cp=cyclopentadienyl, M=Re, (99m)Tc) with R being a highly potent carbonic-anhydrase-targeting vector is reported.
