The AMMA Land Surface Model Intercomparison Project (ALMIP)
Aaron Boone,Patricia de Rosnay,Gianpaolo Balsamo,Anton Beljaars,Franck Chopin,Bertrand Decharme,Christine Delire,Agnès Ducharne,Simon Gascoin,Manuela Grippa,Françoise Guichard,Yeugeniy M. Gusev,Phil Harris,Lionel Jarlan,Laurent Kergoat,Eric Mougin,Olga N. Nasonova,Anette Norgaard,Tristan Orgeval,Catherine Ottlé,Isabelle Poccard-Leclercq,Jan Polcher,Inge Sandholt,S. Saux-Picart,Christopher M. Taylor,Yongkang Xue +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, a multiscale modeling approach using an ensemble of land surface models that rely on dedicated satellite-based forcing and land surface parameter products, and data from the African Multidisciplinary Monsoon Analysis (AMMA) observational field campaigns is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intercomparison and analyses of the climatology of the West African Monsoon in the West African Monsoon Modeling and Evaluation project (WAMME) first model intercomparison experiment
Yongkang Xue,Fernando De Sales,William K. M. Lau,Aaron Boone,Jinming Feng,Jinming Feng,Paul A. Dirmeyer,Zhichang Guo,Kyu-Myong Kim,Akio Kitoh,Vadlamani Kumar,Isabelle Poccard-Leclercq,Natalie M. Mahowald,Wilfran Moufouma-Okia,Phillip Pegion,David P. Rowell,Jae Schemm,Siegfried D. Schubert,Andrea Sealy,Wassila M. Thiaw,Augustin Vintzileos,Steven F. Williams,Man-Li C. Wu +22 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented the first WAMME experiment and evaluated the performance of the WAMme general circulation models in simulating variability of WAM precipitation, surface temperature, and major circulation features at seasonal and intraseasonal scales.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of the WAMME model surface fluxes using results from the AMMA land-surface model intercomparison project
TL;DR: In this article, surface energy fluxes simulated by an ensemble of land surface models from AMMA Land-surface Model Intercomparison Project (ALMIP) have been used as a proxy for the best estimate of the real world values in order to evaluate GCM and RCM simulations under the auspices of the West African Monsoon Modelling Experiment (WAMME) project, since such large-scale observations do not exist.
Evaluation of Sahel ground climatology from 1982 to 1990 based on satellite derived LAI, 200 raingauge stations, and a vegetation model (SSIB)
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used observational precipitation data, satellite derived LAI, and a land surface model (SSiB) to evaluate the ground climatology over the Sahel region.
Journal Article

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the scientific challenge in West African monsoon simulation and discuss the West African Monsoon Modeling and Evaluation project (WAMME) initiative and its approaches to improve WAM simulations.
