Journal ArticleDOI
A nationwide survey of hospital-based thalassemia patients and standards of care and a preliminary assessment of the national prevention program in Sri Lanka.
Anuja P Premawardhana,RM Mudiyanse,Shamila T De Silva,Nilam Jiffry,Udaya B. Nelumdeniya,Udaya de Silva,Sanath P Lamabadusuriya,K.R.C. Pushpakumara,Randima Dissanayaka,M. Weatherall,Nancy F Oliveri +29 more
TL;DR: Central coordination of the treatment and ultimately prevention of thalassemia is urgently needed in Sri Lanka and development of expert centers with designated staff with sufficient resources will improve the quality of care.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genotype-phenotype association analysis identifies the role of α globin genes in modulating disease severity of β thalassaemia intermedia in Sri Lanka.
S. Perera,Angela Allen,Angela Allen,Ishari Silva,Menaka Hapugoda,M. Nirmali Wickramarathne,Indira Wijesiriwardena,Stephen Allen,David C. Rees,Dimitar G. Efremov,Chris Fisher,David J. Weatherall,Anuja Premawardhena +12 more
TL;DR: In Sri Lanka, co-inheritance of either excessα globin genes in β thalassaemia heterozygotes or α globin gene deletions inβ thalASSaemia homozygotes is a significant factor in modulating disease severity.
Journal ArticleDOI
A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial of oral hydroxyurea for transfusion-dependent β-thalassaemia
Nirmani Yasara,Nethmi Wickramarathne,Chamila Mettananda,Ishari Silva,Nizri Hameed,K Attanayaka,Rexan Rodrigo,Nirmani Wickramasinghe,Lakshman Perera,A. Manamperi,Anuja Premawardhena,Sachith Mettananda +11 more
TL;DR: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hydroxyurea in transfusion-dependent β-thalassaemia was conducted in this article .
Journal ArticleDOI
Rare hemoglobin variants: Hb G-Szuhu (HBB: c.243C>G), Hb G-Coushatta (HBB: c.68A>C) and Hb Mizuho (HBB: c.206T>C) in Sri Lankan families.
P.S. Perera,Ishari Silva,Menaka Hapugoda,M.N. Wickramarathne,I Wijesiriwardena,Dimitar G. Efremov,Chris Fisher,David J. Weatherall,Anuja Premawardhena +8 more
TL;DR: The clinical presentation of unusual hemoglobin (Hb), variants in three Sri Lankan cases under study for β-thalassemia intermedia (β-TI) is described, believed to be the first report on their occurrence in Sri Lanka as well as from the Indian subcontinent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of liver MRI R2(FerriScan®) VS liver MRI T2* as a measure of body iron load in a cohort of beta thalassaemia major patients
Padmapani Padeniya,S.R. Siriwardana,Dileepa Senajith Ediriweera,Nayana Samarasinghe,Sasanka Silva,Ishari Silva,Nizri Ahamed,Madunil A. Niriella,Anuja Premawardhena +8 more
TL;DR: The lack of concordance of T2* and R2 especially in those with very high reading on R2 suggest the potential errors in interpretations that can occur in “non-expert centres”; which are likely to lead to errors in clinical judgement on the intensity of chelation therapy needed.
