Surveillance of adenoviruses and noroviruses in European recreational waters
A. Peter Wyn-Jones,Annalaura Carducci,Nigel Cook,Martin D'Agostino,Maurizio Divizia,Jens Fleischer,Christophe Gantzer,Andrew Gawler,Rosina Girones,Christiane Höller,Ana Maria de Roda Husman,David Kay,Iwona Kozyra,Juan M. López-Pila,Michele Muscillo,Maria São José Nascimento,George Papageorgiou,Saskia A. Rutjes,Jane Sellwood,Regine Szewzyk,Mark D. Wyer +20 more
TL;DR: The simultaneous detection of infectious adenovirus and of adenOVirus and NoV by (RT)PCR suggests that the presence of infectious viruses in recreational waters may constitute a public health risk upon exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tracing enteric viruses in the European berry fruit supply chain
Leena Maunula,Agnieszka Kaupke,Petra Vasickova,Kirsi Söderberg,Iwona Kozyra,Sava Lazić,Wim H.M. van der Poel,Martijn Bouwknegt,Saskia A. Rutjes,Kris Willems,R. Moloney,Martin D'Agostino,Ana Maria de Roda Husman,Carl-Henrik von Bonsdorff,Artur Rzeżutka,Ivo Pavlik,Tamaš Petrović,Nigel Cook +17 more
TL;DR: Insight is given into viral sources and transmission routes and the necessity for thorough compliance with good agricultural and hygienic practice at the farms is emphasized to help protect the public from viral infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Harmonised investigation of the occurrence of human enteric viruses in the leafy green vegetable supply chain in three European countries.
Petros Kokkinos,Iwona Kozyra,Sava Lazić,Martijn Bouwknegt,Saskia A. Rutjes,Kris Willems,R. Moloney,A. M. de Roda Husman,Agnieszka Kaupke,E. Legaki,Martin D'Agostino,Nigel Cook,Artur Rzeżutka,Tamaš Petrović,Apostolos Vantarakis +14 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the existence of viral contamination routes from human and animal sources to the salad vegetable supply chain and more specifically indicate the potential for public health risks due to the virus contamination of leafy green vegetables at primary production.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative farm-to-fork risk assessment model for norovirus and hepatitis A virus in European leafy green vegetable and berry fruit supply chains
Martijn Bouwknegt,Katharina Verhaelen,Artur Rzeżutka,Iwona Kozyra,Leena Maunula,Carl-Henrik von Bonsdorff,Apostolos Vantarakis,Petros Kokkinos,Tamaš Petrović,Sava Lazić,Ivo Pavlik,Petra Vasickova,Kris Willems,Arie H. Havelaar,Saskia A. Rutjes,Ana Maria de Roda Husman +15 more
TL;DR: Attention to full compliance for hand hygiene will improve fresh produce safety related to virus risks most as compared to the other examined sources, given the monitoring results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cryptosporidium oocysts on fresh produce from areas of high livestock production in Poland.
Artur Rzeżutka,R.A.B. Nichols,L. Connelly,Agnieszka Kaupke,Iwona Kozyra,Nigel Cook,S. Birrell,Huw V. Smith +7 more
TL;DR: Oocyst-contaminated foods originated from districts with the highest numbers of homesteads possessing cattle herds and no contaminated produce was detected from districts containing lower numbers of cattle-owning homesteadS, strengthening the assumption that the origin of the contamination was livestock.
