Incidence of and Risk Factors for Falls and Injurious Falls among the Community-dwelling Elderly
TL;DR: Multivariate analyses showed that the following factors were statistically significantly associated with an increased rate of falls: dizziness, frequent physical activity, and having days on which activities were limited because of a health problem.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus.
Sasha Bernatsky,J. F. Boivin,Lawrence Joseph,S. Manzi,Ellen M. Ginzler,Dafna D. Gladman,Murray B. Urowitz,Paul R. Fortin,M. Petri,Susan G. Barr,Caroline Gordon,Sang Cheol Bae,David A. TL;DR: The Lupus Survival Study Group data are reviewed and particularly the data from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, NY is reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gait speed as an incremental predictor of mortality and major morbidity in elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
Jonathan Afilalo,Mark J. Eisenberg,Jean-Francois Morin,Howard Bergman,Howard Bergman,Johanne Monette,Johanne Monette,Nicolas Noiseux,Louis P. Perrault,Karen P. Alexander,Yves Langlois,Nandini Dendukuri,Patrick Chamoun,Georges Kasparian,Sophie Robichaud,S. Michael Gharacholou,J. F. Boivin +16 more
TL;DR: Gait speed is a simple and effective test that may identify a subset of vulnerable elderly patients at incrementally higher risk of mortality and major morbidity after cardiac surgery.
Journal ArticleDOI
A cohort analysis of excess mortality in asthma and the use of inhaled beta-agonists.
Samy Suissa,Pierre Ernst,J. F. Boivin,Ralph I. Horwitz,B Habbick,D. Cockroft,Lucie Blais,M McNutt,A S Buist,Walter O. Spitzer +9 more
TL;DR: This paper examines the question of asthma and non-asthma mortality using data from the entire cohort of 12,301 users of asthma drugs followed during the period 1980 through 1987 and finds that the risk of asthma death began to escalate drastically at about 1.4 canisters per month of inhaled beta-agonist, the recommended limit.
Journal ArticleDOI
Addition of Frailty and Disability to Cardiac Surgery Risk Scores Identifies Elderly Patients at High Risk of Mortality or Major Morbidity
Jonathan Afilalo,Salvatore Mottillo,Mark J. Eisenberg,Karen P. Alexander,Nicolas Noiseux,Louis P. Perrault,Jean-Francois Morin,Yves Langlois,Samuel M. Ohayon,Johanne Monette,J. F. Boivin,David M. Shahian,Howard Bergman +12 more
TL;DR: Clinicians should use an integrative approach combining frailty, disability, and risk scores to better characterize elderly patients referred for cardiac surgery and identify those that are at increased risk of dying from cardiac surgery.
