Association between Household Air Pollution Exposure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Outcomes in 13 Low- and Middle-Income Country Settings
Trishul Siddharthan,Matthew R. Grigsby,Dina Goodman,Muhammad Ashique Haider Chowdhury,Adolfo Rubinstein,Vilma Irazola,Laura Gutierrez,J. Jaime Miranda,Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz,Dewan S. Alam,Bruce Kirenga,Rupert Jones,Frederick van Gemert,Robert A. Wise,William Checkley +14 more
TL;DR: Household air pollution exposure was associated with a higher prevalence of COPD, particularly among women, and it is likely a leading population‐attributable risk factor for COPD in resource‐poor settings.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trade-Offs in Relative Limb Length among Peruvian Children: Extending the Thrifty Phenotype Hypothesis to Limb Proportions
TL;DR: The data support the extension of the thrifty phenotype hypothesis to limb growth, and suggest that certain elements of limb growth may be sacrificed under tough conditions to buffer more functional traits.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The outlined interventions provide a pathway for countries attempting to convert the UN Sustainable Development Goal commitments into tangible action and could be a starting place for low-income and middle-income countries developing universal health coverage packages.

TL;DR: Indoor cooking with biomass fuels is an important cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in LMICs, and improved cookstoves with chimneys may be effective in the prevention of chronic diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of salt substitution on community-wide blood pressure and hypertension incidence.
Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz,Victor G. Sal y Rosas,Vilarmina Ponce-Lucero,María Kathia Cárdenas,Rodrigo M. Carrillo-Larco,Rodrigo M. Carrillo-Larco,Francisco Diez-Canseco,M. Amalia Pesantes,Katherine A. Sacksteder,Robert H. Gilman,J. Jaime Miranda +10 more
TL;DR: A step-wedged cluster randomized trial demonstrates population-wide reductions in blood pressure, which appear to be higher in individuals with hypertension, as well as reductions in risk of hypertension by around 50% for those without hypertension at baseline, after community-wide replacement of regular salt with a potassium-enriched alternative.
