Extending beyond the boundaries of science, art, and culture, content-based multimedia information retrieval provides new paradigms and methods for searching through the myriad variety of media all over the world. This survey reviews 100p recent articles on content-based multimedia information retrieval and discusses their role in current research directions which include browsing and search paradigms, user studies, affective computing, learning, semantic queries, new features and media types, high performance indexing, and evaluation techniques. Based on the current state of the art, we discuss the major challenges for the future.

A theory of expectations is used to explain how music evokes various emotions for readers interested in cognitive science and evolutionary psychology as well as music. The psychological theory of expectation that David Huron proposes in "Sweet Anticipation" grew out of experimental efforts to understand how music evokes emotions. These efforts evolved into a general theory of expectation that will prove informative to readers interested in cognitive science and evolutionary psychology as well as those interested in music. The book describes a set of psychological mechanisms and illustrates how these mechanisms work in the case of music. All examples of notated music can be heard on the Web. Huron proposes that emotions evoked by expectation involve five functionally distinct response systems: reactive responses (which engage defensive reflexes); tension responses (where uncertainty leads to stress); predictive responses (which reward accurate prediction); imaginative responses (which facilitate deferred gratification); and appraisal responses (which occur after conscious thought is engaged). For real-world events, these five response systems typically produce a complex mixture of feelings. The book identifies some of the aesthetic possibilities afforded by expectation, and shows how common musical devices (such as syncopation, cadence, meter, tonality, and climax) exploit the psychological opportunities. The theory also provides new insights into the physiological psychology of awe, laughter, and "spine-tingling chills." Huron traces the psychology of expectations from the patterns of the physical/cultural world through imperfectly learned heuristics used to predict that world to the phenomenal qualia experienced by those who apprehend the world.

Sweet Anticipation: Music and the Psychology of Expectation

Scholars using digital libraries and archives routinely create worksets-aggregations of digital objects-as a way to segregate resources of interest for in-depth scrutiny. To illustrate how worksets can enhance the scholarly utility of digital library content, we distill from prior user studies three key objectives for worksets (extra-digital library manipulation, intra-item properties, and robust representations), and discuss how they motivated the workset model being developed at the HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC). We describe how HTRC's implementation of its RDF-compliant workset model helps to satisfy these objectives.

Worksets Expand the Scholarly Utility of Digital Libraries

Linked Data provides a conceptual foundation for creating unified views across Digital Libraries, but implementation challenges must be overcome to realize the vision of computationally assisted cross‐corpus research. We report practical experiences comparing two alternative workset building approaches across combined datasets: the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Early English Books Online Text Creation Partnership. In one experiment we combine both datasets within one triplestore using a single ontology and apply consolidated querying; in the other we build two distributed triplestores, each dataset conforming to its own ontology, and connected through federated querying. Each solution presents tradeoffs in complexity, system efficiency and responsiveness, and in the workload of configuring new methods providing access to Digital Libraries. We demonstrate that choosing a consolidated or federated approach fundamentally alters the dataset configuration process for cross‐corpora workset building, so should be considered early in deployment specification and design. As both approaches provide equivalent functionality to the end‐user, the practice and experience documented here inform design and development of distributed Linked Data Digital Libraries offering combined collection querying.

Combine or connect: Practical experiences querying library linked data

We develop a content-based audio COver Song IdeNtification (COSIN) system to detect/group cover songs. The COSIN takes music audio content as input and performs similarity searching to locate variants of the input (i.e., cover versions). Identified cover songs are returned in the rank order according to their similarity to the input. The COSIN also incorporates a set of tools to evaluate retrieval performance so researchers can explore different retrieval schemes and parameters (e.g. recall, precision). The COSIN utilizes a suite of techniques to detect cover songs including: Pitch + Dynamic Programming (DP), Chroma + DP, and Semantic Feature Summarization (SFS) + Hash-Based Approximate Matching (HBAM). Demonstration system shows that COSIN is a very potential music content retrieval tool. Running some music retrieval schemes on COSIN platform, recent experiments with SFS + LSH Variants demonstrate a nicely balanced efficiency (search speed) v. performance (search accuracy) tradeoff.
