Journal ArticleDOI
A chimeric simian/human immunodeficiency virus expressing a primary patient human immunodeficiency virus type 1 isolate env causes an AIDS-like disease after in vivo passage in rhesus monkeys.
Keith A. Reimann,J T Li,Ronald S. Veazey,Matilda Halloran,In-Woo Park,Gunilla B. Karlsson,Joseph Sodroski,Norman L. Letvin +7 more
TL;DR: It is shown that after two serial in vivo passages by intravenous blood inoculation of naive rhesus monkeys, this SHIV (SHIV-89.6P) induced CD4 lymphopenia and an AIDS-like disease with wasting and opportunistic infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistent infection of macaques with simian-human immunodeficiency viruses.
J T Li,Matilda Halloran,Carol I. Lord,A Watson,J Ranchalis,M Fung,Norman L. Letvin,Joseph Sodroski +7 more
TL;DR: The consistency with which SHIV infection of cynomolgus monkeys is initiated and the similarities in the neutralizing antibody response to SHIV and HIV-1 support the utility of this model system for the study of HIV- 1 prophylaxis.
