Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is broadly recognised as having the potential to play a key role in meeting climate change targets, delivering low carbon heat and power, decarbonising industry and, more recently, its ability to facilitate the net removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. However, despite this broad consensus and its technical maturity, CCS has not yet been deployed on a scale commensurate with the ambitions articulated a decade ago. Thus, in this paper we review the current state-of-the-art of CO2 capture, transport, utilisation and storage from a multi-scale perspective, moving from the global to molecular scales. In light of the COP21 commitments to limit warming to less than 2 °C, we extend the remit of this study to include the key negative emissions technologies (NETs) of bioenergy with CCS (BECCS), and direct air capture (DAC). Cognisant of the non-technical barriers to deploying CCS, we reflect on recent experience from the UK's CCS commercialisation programme and consider the commercial and political barriers to the large-scale deployment of CCS. In all areas, we focus on identifying and clearly articulating the key research challenges that could usefully be addressed in the coming decade.

Review of natural gas hydrates as an energy resource: Prospects and challenges ☆

A compilation of compressional-wave ( V p) and shear-wave ( V s) velocities and densities for a wide variety of common lithologies is used to define new nonlinear, multivalued, and quantitative relations between these properties for the Earth's crust. Wireline borehole logs, vertical seismic profiles, laboratory measurements, and seismic tomography models provide a diverse dataset for deriving empirical relations between crustal V p and V s. The proposed V s as a function of V p relations fit V s and V p borehole logs in Quaternary alluvium and Salinian granites as well as laboratory measurements over a 7-km/sec-wide range in V p. The relations derived here are very close to those used to develop a regional 3D velocity model for southern California, based on pre-1970 data, and thus provide support for that model. These data, and these relations, show a rapid increase in V s as V p increases to 3.5 km/sec leading to higher shear-wave velocities in young sedimentary deposits than commonly assumed. These relations, appropriate for active continental margins where earthquakes are prone to occur, suggests that amplification of strong ground motions by shallow geologic deposits may not be as large as predicted by some earlier models.

P-Wave Attenuation in Reservoir and Non-Reservoir Rock

We conducted an acoustic pulse transmission experiment in brine as its temperature decreased from 25 oC to – 21oC. The purpose was to understand how the transmitted wave changes with the onset of freezing. The main practical reason for this experiment was to use partially frozen brine as an analogue for a mixture of methane hydrate and water present in the pore space of a gas hydrate reservoir. The results indicate that as the brine cools, the P-wave velocity decreases from 1500 m/s to 1480 m/s. With the onset of freezing, the velocity begins to increase until it reaches a maximum of 3700 m/s. Counter to our intuition, this increase in the velocity is accompanied by a strong reduction of the signal’s amplitude and frequency content. The signal quality does not recover even after a brine sample was kept frozen at – 21oC for over two months. This result may partly explain the reported effect that the attenuation in methane hydrate sediment is relatively large although the hydrate in the pore space acts to dramatically increase the velocity.

We explore a package of parallel porous layers, each filled with a different fluid. Assume that this package is sampled by an elastic wave with the wavelength much larger than the thickness of an individual layer. Also assume that the layers are hydraulically isolated from each other, meaning that the diffusion length is smaller than that of the individual layer. This assumption is relevant to a patchy saturation scenario. Suppose that we wish to conduct the fluid substitution operation on this package treated as a single porous elastic body. What is the effective bulk modulus of the pore fluid to be used in this operation that will result in the same elastic modulus as computed by Backus averaging the individual moduli of the layers? We address this question analytically by assuming that the porosity, dry frame, and the mineral matrix properties of the individual layers are the same for all layers. The only difference between the layers is the pore fluid. We find that the resulting effective bulk modulus of the fluid thus derived falls between the arithmetic and harmonic averages of the fluid bulk moduli in the layers. It can be approximated by a linear combination of these two bounds where the weights are 0.50 and 0.50 or 0.75 for the arithmetic average and 0.25 for the harmonic average, depending on the elastic moduli of the dry frame, the mineral, and the pore fluids. This solution also provides a relation between the effective bulk modulus of the pore fluid in the system under examination and water saturation to be used in the fluid substitution operation at a coarse spatial scale.
