Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is broadly recognised as having the potential to play a key role in meeting climate change targets, delivering low carbon heat and power, decarbonising industry and, more recently, its ability to facilitate the net removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. However, despite this broad consensus and its technical maturity, CCS has not yet been deployed on a scale commensurate with the ambitions articulated a decade ago. Thus, in this paper we review the current state-of-the-art of CO2 capture, transport, utilisation and storage from a multi-scale perspective, moving from the global to molecular scales. In light of the COP21 commitments to limit warming to less than 2 °C, we extend the remit of this study to include the key negative emissions technologies (NETs) of bioenergy with CCS (BECCS), and direct air capture (DAC). Cognisant of the non-technical barriers to deploying CCS, we reflect on recent experience from the UK's CCS commercialisation programme and consider the commercial and political barriers to the large-scale deployment of CCS. In all areas, we focus on identifying and clearly articulating the key research challenges that could usefully be addressed in the coming decade.

Review of natural gas hydrates as an energy resource: Prospects and challenges ☆

A compilation of compressional-wave ( V p) and shear-wave ( V s) velocities and densities for a wide variety of common lithologies is used to define new nonlinear, multivalued, and quantitative relations between these properties for the Earth's crust. Wireline borehole logs, vertical seismic profiles, laboratory measurements, and seismic tomography models provide a diverse dataset for deriving empirical relations between crustal V p and V s. The proposed V s as a function of V p relations fit V s and V p borehole logs in Quaternary alluvium and Salinian granites as well as laboratory measurements over a 7-km/sec-wide range in V p. The relations derived here are very close to those used to develop a regional 3D velocity model for southern California, based on pre-1970 data, and thus provide support for that model. These data, and these relations, show a rapid increase in V s as V p increases to 3.5 km/sec leading to higher shear-wave velocities in young sedimentary deposits than commonly assumed. These relations, appropriate for active continental margins where earthquakes are prone to occur, suggests that amplification of strong ground motions by shallow geologic deposits may not be as large as predicted by some earlier models.

Dichotomy in geophysical remote sensing is both relative and absolute: while the seismic reflection relates to the impedance contrast, the reservoir properties, such as porosity, relate to the absolute value of the impedance. One way of interpreting the relative in terms of the absolute is to perturb the absolute and calculate the corresponding relative. To accomplish this task in geophysics, the velocity and density curves from an existing prototype well are perturbed according to a likely situation at a different location. A new pseudowell thus created is used to generate synthetic full-waveform seismograms which are then compared to real data at the location, with the expectation that the similarity in the seismic response reflects the similarity in the reservoir properties.

Mostramos como aplicar el metodo de analisis factorial estadistico a la prediccion de la tension efectiva de los atributos sismicos. Se abordan dos ejemplos, uno basado en un conjunto de datos de laboratorio y relevante para los mecanismos de descarga de la generacion anormal de presion de poros y el otro basado en datos de pozo y una seccion sismica, importantes para el mecanismo de desequilibrio de la compactacion. Podria decirse que este metodo de interpretacion sismica es superior a los actuales enfoques deterministas y estadisticos, ya que reduce la gran cantidad de atributos sismicos disponibles a un pequeno numero de factores mas relevantes para la tension efectiva y, ademas, proporciona una manera matematicamente sistematica de llegar a valores de tension efectiva mas probables, asi como el intervalo de confianza.

[1] We present a deterministic methodology for mapping the lithology, pore fluid, and porosity from seismic data. The input is the P- and S-wave data volumes that may come, e.g., from acoustic and elastic inversion or cross-well measurements. The output is the pore fluid type (hydrocarbon versus water), total porosity, and clay content. The key element of this methodology is a site-specific rock physics model that provides the needed transforms from the elastic rock properties to the reservoir properties. This model is established by comparing model-based predictions, such as impedance versus porosity, to the relations present in well log data. Once selected, the model is used to identify the presence of hydrocarbons from a combination of the P-wave impedance and Poisson's ratio. Then the P-wave impedance is used to map porosity and clay content assuming that a deterministic relation exists between the latter two properties. All deterministic equations are calibrated at a well and then are applied to upscaled well log data to confirm their validity at the seismic scale. This methodology is applied to log data from a fluvial environment. The results indicate that the relative error in porosity determination is 14%, which is acceptable for reservoir characterization purposes.
