Photodynamic therapy of cancer: An update†‡
Patrizia Agostinis,Kristian Berg,Keith A. Cengel,Thomas H. Foster,Albert W. Girotti,Sandra O. Gollnick,Stephen M. Hahn,Michael R. Hamblin,Michael R. Hamblin,Asta Juzeniene,David Kessel,Mladen Korbelik,Johan Emelian Moan,Johan Emelian Moan,Pawel Mroz,Dominika Nowis,Jacques Piette,Brian C. Wilson,Jakub Golab,Jakub Golab +19 more
TL;DR: The photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a clinically approved, minimally invasive therapeutic procedure that can exert a selective cytotoxic activity toward malignant cells as discussed by the authors, which can prolong survival in patients with inoperable cancers and significantly improve quality of life.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inflammation as a link between obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
TL;DR: The objectives of this review are to expose recent data supporting the role of the immune system in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and to examine various mechanisms underlying this relationship.
Journal ArticleDOI
NF-κB activation by reactive oxygen species: Fifteen years later
TL;DR: This review critically review the recent data highlighting the role of ROS in NF-κB activation by proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), two major components of innate immunity.
Journal ArticleDOI
PERK is required at the ER-mitochondrial contact sites to convey apoptosis after ROS-based ER stress
Tom Verfaillie,N Rubio,N Rubio,Abhishek D. Garg,Geert Bultynck,Rosario Rizzuto,Jean-Paul Decuypere,Jacques Piette,Linehan C,Sanjeev Gupta,Afshin Samali,Patrizia Agostinis +11 more
TL;DR: It is revealed that PERK (RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR)-like ER kinase), a key ER stress sensor of the unfolded protein response, is uniquely enriched at the mitochondria-associated ER membranes (MAMs), suggesting that loss of PERK may cause defects in cell death sensitivity in pathological conditions linked to ROS-mediated ER stress.
Journal ArticleDOI
The ribosomal L5 protein is associated with mdm-2 and mdm-2-p53 complexes.
TL;DR: A unique ribonucleoprotein complex composed of 5S RNA, L5 protein, mdm-2 proteins, p53 protein, and possibly the 5.8S RNA is identified, which suggests a role for these proteins and RNA species in ribosomal biogenesis, ribosome transport from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, or translational regulation in the cell.
