Journal ArticleDOI
Risk factors for suicidality in Europe: results from the ESEMED study
M Bernal,Josep Maria Haro,Sebastian Bernert,Terry Brugha,R. de Graaf,Ronny Bruffaerts,J P Lépine,G. de Girolamo,Gemma Vilagut,Isabelle Gasquet,J V Torres,Viviane Kovess,Dirk Heider,Jan Neeleman,Ronald C. Kessler,Jordi Alonso +15 more
TL;DR: In spite of meaningful country variation in prevalence, risk factors for suicidality are consistent in the European countries and population prevention programmes should focus on early diagnosis and treatment of major depression and alcohol abuse and in those individuals with recent appearance of suicidal ideas.
Journal ArticleDOI

Michael King,Irwin Nazareth,Gus Levy,Carl Walker,Richard W Morris,Scott Weich,Juan Angel Bellon-Saameno,Berta Moreno,Igor Švab,Danica Rotar,Janez Rifel,Heidi-Ingrid Maaroos,Anu Aluoja,Ruth Kalda,Jan Neeleman,Mirjam I. Geerlings,Miguel Xavier,Manuel Caldas de Almeida,Bernardo Correa,Francisco Torres-González +19 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors report on differences in prevalence of common mental disorders between participating countries and develop a multifactor risk index to predict onset of depression in primary care attendees in six European countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development and Validation of an International Risk Prediction Algorithm for Episodes of Major Depression in General Practice Attendees The PredictD Study
Michael King,Carl Walker,Gus Levy,Christian Bottomley,Patrick Royston,Scott Weich,Juan Angel Bellon-Saameno,Berta Moreno,Igor Švab,Danica Rotar,Janez Rifel,Heidi-Ingrid Maaroos,Anu Aluoja,Ruth Kalda,Jan Neeleman,Mirjam I. Geerlings,Miguel Xavier,Idalmiro Carraca,Manuel Gonçalves-Pereira,Benjamín Vicente,Sandra Saldivia,Roberto Melipillán,Francisco Torres-González,Irwin Nazareth +23 more
TL;DR: This first risk algorithm for onset of major depression functions as well as similar risk algorithms for cardiovascular events and may be useful in prevention of depression.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tolerance of suicide, religion and suicide rates: an ecological and individual study in 19 Western countries
TL;DR: Ecological associations between religious variables and suicide rates are stronger for women than men, stronger for measures of belief than observance and mediated by tolerance of suicide.
Journal ArticleDOI
Externalizing and internalizing problems in relation to autonomic function: A population-based study in preadolescents
Andrea Dietrich,Harriëtte Riese,Frouke E. P. L. Sondeijker,Kirstin Greaves-Lord,Arie M. van Roon,Johan Ormel,Jan Neeleman,Judith G. M. Rosmalen +7 more
TL;DR: Externalizing and internalizing problems are associated with divergent autonomic patterns, suggesting autonomic underarousal and overarousAL, respectively, and problems starting early in life may specifically account for this.
