Journal ArticleDOI
Binding of HTLV-III/LAV to T4+ T cells by a complex of the 110K viral protein and the T4 molecule.
TL;DR: The binding of gp110 to the T4 molecule may be a major factor in HTLV-III/LAV tropism and may prove useful in developing therapeutic or preventive measures for the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Idiopathic CD4+ T-lymphocytopenia--an analysis of five patients with unexplained opportunistic infections.
Thomas J. Spira,Bonnie M. Jones,Janet K.A. Nicholson,Renu B. Lal,Thomas Rowe,Alison C. Mawle,Carl B. Lauter,Jonas A. Shulman,Roberta A. Monson +8 more
TL;DR: Iiopathic CD4+ T-lymphocytopenia differs from HIV infection in its immunologic characteristics and in its apparent lack of progression over time.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of TruCount absolute-count tubes for determining CD4 and CD8 cell numbers in human immunodeficiency virus-positive adults
Carol T. Schnizlein-Bick,John Spritzler,Cynthia L. Wilkening,Janet K.A. Nicholson,Maurice R.G. O'Gorman +4 more
TL;DR: The use of TruCount decreased both the inter- and intralaboratory variability in determining absolute CD4 and CD8 counts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to human T-lymphotropic virus type III/lymphadenopathy associated virus and immunologic abnormalities in asymptomatic homosexual men.
Janet K.A. Nicholson,J. S. Mcdougal,Harold W. Jaffe,Thomas J. Spira,M. S. Kennedy,B M Jones,Darrow Ww,M. Morgan,M. Hubbard +8 more
TL;DR: Multivariate statistical analysis showed that exposure to HTLV-III/LAV was the single best predictor of T-cell (and other) immunologic abnormalities, and the association of other microbial serologic findings with HT LV/L AV seropositivity or T- cell changes was a coincidental function of sexual activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of a method for counting absolute numbers of cells with a flow cytometer.
TL;DR: The values obtained by the TruCount method were 5 to 10% higher than those obtained by conventional methods used to determine absolute numbers of cells, and these differences are believed to be due to the methods of determining absolute cell counts and not to faulty identification of lymphocyte subsets.
