Empirical observations of the spawning migration of European eels: The long and dangerous road to the Sargasso Sea
David Righton,Håkan Westerberg,Eric Feunteun,Finn Økland,Patrick G. Gargan,Elsa Amilhat,Julian D. Metcalfe,Javier Lobón-Cerviá,Niklas Sjöberg,Janek Simon,Anthony Acou,Marisa Vedor,Alan Walker,Thomas Trancart,Uwe Brämick,Kim Aarestrup +15 more
TL;DR: The timing of autumn escapement and the rate of migration are inconsistent with the century-long held assumption that eels spawn as a single reproductive cohort in the springtime following their escapements, and it is suggested that European eels adopt a mixed migratory strategy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interaction between the introduced eastern mosquitofish and two autochthonous Spanish toothcarps
TL;DR: In aquaria, adults and young-of-the-year (YOY) of both Spanish toothcarp Aphanius iberus and Valencia hispanica received more aggression in the presence of eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki, and aggression almost disappeared at low water temperatures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental determinants of recruitment and their influence on the population dynamics of stream-living brown trout Salmo trutta
TL;DR: This study exemplifies how an environmentally driven animal population may persist on time with little or no operation of endogenous regulatory mechanisms in the dynamics of animal populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmentally induced spatio-temporal variations in the fecundity of brown trout Salmo trutta L.: trade-offs between egg size and number
TL;DR: The combination of temporal (year-to-year) and spatial (between rivers) variations in egg size and number showed a significant negative correlation, supporting the operation of a trade-off between these two traits.
Journal ArticleDOI
Longitudinal structure, density and production rates of a neotropical stream fish assemblage: the river Ubatiba in the Serra do Mar, southeast Brazil
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assessed spatio-temporal variations in the structure, density, biomass and production rates of fish in the neotropical River Ubatiba (Serra do Mar, southeast Brazil).
