Black soot and the survival of Tibetan glaciers
Baiqing Xu,Junji Cao,James Hansen,Tandong Yao,Daniel R. Joswia,Ninglian Wang,Guangjian Wu,Mo Wang,Huabiao Zhao,Wei Yang,Xianqin Liu,Jianqiao He +11 more
TL;DR: Evidence is found that reduced black soot emissions, in addition to reduced greenhouse gases, may be required to avoid demise of Himalayan glaciers and retain the benefits of glaciers for seasonal fresh water supplies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Post-depositional enrichment of black soot in snow-pack and accelerated melting of Tibetan glaciers
TL;DR: The authors measured the redistribution of black carbon along monthly snow-pits on a Tien Shan glacier and found that soot was greatly enriched, defined as the ratio of concentration to original snow concentration, in the unmelted snow-pack by at least an order of magnitude.
Journal ArticleDOI
Concentrations, seasonal variations, and transport of carbonaceous aerosols at a remote Mountainous region in western China
TL;DR: In this article, carbonaceous aerosol concentrations were determined for total suspended particle samples collected from Muztagh Ata mountain in western China from December 2003 to February 2006, and the observed EC was within the range of loadings estimated from a glacial ice core.
