The vibrational spectrum of calcite (CaCO3) is evaluated at an ab initio periodic quantum-mechanical level by using the CRYSTAL package. A localized basis set of Gaussian-type functions and the B3LYP hybrid Hamiltonian are adopted. The dynamical matrix is obtained by differentiating numerically the analytical first derivatives of the energy. The accuracy with respect to all computational parameters is documented. The calculated frequencies are compared with available IR and RAMAN data (16 and 5 peaks, respectively), the mean absolute error being less than 12 cm−1 (frequencies range from 100 to 1600 cm−1). Overall, the agreement with experiment is very satisfactory, and shows that simulation can produce at a relatively low cost the full spectra of crystalline compounds of mineralogical interest.

Low-power integrated projection technology can play a key role in development of low-cost mobile devices with built-in high-resolution projectors. Low-cost 3D imaging and holography systems are also among applications of such a technology. In this paper, an integrated projection system based on a two-dimensional optical phased array with fast beam steering capability is reported. Forward biased p-i-n phase modulators with 200MHz bandwidth are used per each array element for rapid phase control. An optimization algorithm is implemented to compensate for the phase dependent attenuation of the p-i-n modulators. Using rapid vector scanning technique, images were formed and recorded within a single snapshot of the IR camera.

Nanoparticles and core–shell nanocomposite based new generation water remediation materials and analytical techniques: A review

We present a light emitting diode (LED)-based ultramini digital micromirror device projector with a size of 75 mm x 67 mm x 42 mm and a weight of 338 g. The LED illuminator inside this projector makes it possible to achieve a volume of 18 cm(3) by using a dichroic filter and a collimating lens. The illumination system consists of high uniformity of 93% through a microlens array as a homogenizer. A total internal reflection prism is also used to reduce the size of both the illumination system and the telecentric projection lens. A projection lens system with an ultrasmall track of 42 mm, including a high modulation transfer function value of 0.4 at 46.2 line pairs/mm, an optical distortion of only 0.25 %, and a television distortion of 0.01%, is designed. Through the above superior specification, we can produce a 20 in. (51 cm) color display comparable in brightness to a laptop with a contrast of 3700:1. The device is compact and suitable for personal use.

High efficiency pocket-size projector with a compact projection lens and a light emitting diode-based light source system.

Nanotechnology is a fast-emerging field and has received applications in almost every field of life. Exploration of new synthetic technologies for size and shape control of nanomaterials is getting immense consideration owing to their exceptional properties and applications. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are among the most important group of nanoparticles thanks to their diverse applications in medical, electronic, environmental, and industrial sectors. There have been numerous synthetic routes of MNPs including thermal decomposition, co-precipitation, microemulsion, microwave assisted, chemical vapor deposition, combustion synthesis, and laser pyrolysis synthesis. The synthesized MNPs have been successfully applied in medical fields for therapy, bioimaging, drug delivery, and so on. Among environmental aspects, there has been great intimidation of organic pollutants in air and water. Utilization of various wastes as adsorbents has removed 80 to 99.9% of pollutants from contaminated water. MNPs as adsorbents compared to coarse-grained counterparts have seven times higher capacity in removing water pollutants and degrading organic contaminants. This study is focused to introduce and compile various routes of MNP synthesis together with their significant role in water purifications and degradation of organic compounds. The review has compiled recent investigation, and we hope it will find the interest of researchers dealing with nanoparticles and environmental research.

Current advancements of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption and degradation of organic pollutants.

An illumination system using LED sources for pocket-size projectors is designed. Its color gamut is much larger than the sRGB standard. The maximum theoretical efficiency of this system is 29.98% by non-imaging theory-based calculations. To analyze the system model, 1.5 × 106 rays are traced by using the LightTools software. The total light flux that illuminates the digital micromirror device is 44 lm and the American National Standards Institute 13-point uniformity on the surface is 91.55%,
−91.15% with a system efficiency of 28.3%. The calculations are in good agreement with the simulation results. The illumination system can be used for personal pocket-size projectors providing a 15-20 in. (38-51 cm) color display with the brightness comparable with a laptop.

Illumination system using LED sources for pocket-size projectors

The designs of 300 mm ruling engine producing gratings and echelles under interferometric control (CIOMP-2) are presented. A new ruling-tool carriage system and its driving mechanism—which are easy to manufacture—are proposed. A new blank carriage system, controlled by a dual-frequency laser interferometer and a piezoelectric actuator, is designed. The CIOMP-2 ruling engine can now rule grating blanks with dimensions up to 300  mm×300  mm, and mainly rules gratings with grating constants between 10 and 2400  lines/mm. The wavelength range of CIOMP-2 gratings is from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths. Experiments show that the new ruling-tool carriage system works well and stability of motion is improved with the help of a flexure-hinge structure, and the threefold standard deviation values of the blank carriage positioning errors are less than ∼5  nm. For 600  line/mm gratings (diffraction order m=−1), the scatter intensities and ghosts reach 10−5 of the maximum intensity. The scatter intensities and ghost of gratings ruled with CIOMP-2 are low, and no Rowland ghosts are visible. The gratings ruled by CIOMP-2 have high diffraction efficiency and resolving power. CIOMP-2 can also produce varied-line-space, bend-line, and aberration-reducing gratings and echelles.

300 mm ruling engine producing gratings and echelles under interferometric control in China

A spectral reduction algorithm for an echelle spectrometer with spherical mirrors that builds a one-to-one correspondence between the wavelength and pixel position is proposed. The algorithm accuracy is improved by calculating the offset distance of the principal ray from the center of the image plane in the two-dimensional vertical direction and compensating the spectral line bending from the reflecting prism. The simulation and experimental results verify that the maximum deviation of the entire image plane is less than one pixel. This algorithm ensures that the wavelengths calculated from spectrograms have a high spectral resolution, meaning the precision from the spectral analysis reaches engineering standards of practice.

High-accuracy spectral reduction algorithm for the échelle spectrometer.

In an echelle spectrometer equipped with a prism cross-dispersion
				element, wavelength calibration is very difficult because of the complex,
				nonlinear interaction between the prism and the echelle grating. From the
				spectrometer geometry and the dispersion equations for the prism and the
				grating, a detailed mathematical model for wavelength calibration is
				derived that fits the refractive index of the prism in real time. An
				expression relating the refractive index, wavelength, and image
				coordinates is constructed, and standard wavelength sources and image
				positions are adopted to timely calculate the refractive index, which is
				affected by ambient factors such as temperature and air pressure.
				Experimental results indicate that the fitting accuracy of the refractive
				index in real time approaches 10−4, while the wavelength
				accuracy approaches 10−3  nm for the
				entire spectral range.

Wavelength calibration model for prism-type echelle spectrometer byreversely solving prism’s refractive index in real time

A miniaturized portable short-wave infrared imaging spectroscopy optical system is designed based on a prism-grating dispersion module. We established a prism-grating model to calculate the optimal combination of prism and grating parameters to balance spectral smile over the entire band. The design method for the telescopic system and spectroscopic system combines independent design with integrated optimization. The system’s spectral smile and spectral keystone are less than 15 μm and less than half a pixel, respectively. The total optical system length is 230 mm, which meets the miniaturization requirements for airborne systems. The system’s spatial resolution is 1 mrad, and its average spectral resolution is 6.2 nm. The system offers the advantages of large relative aperture, excellent imaging quality, reduced spectral smile, and spectral keystone, miniaturization, and portability.
