Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing individual interethnic admixture and population substructure using a 48-insertion-deletion (INSEL) ancestry-informative marker (AIM) panel.
Ney Pereira Carneiro dos Santos,Elzemar Martins Ribeiro-Rodrigues,Ândrea Ribeiro-dos-Santos,Rui Pereira,Rui Pereira,Leonor Gusmão,António Amorim,João Farias Guerreiro,Marco Antônio Zago,Cecilia Helena Fricke Matte,Mara H. Hutz,Sidney Santos +11 more
TL;DR: The ability to accurately infer interethnic admixtures highlights the usefulness of this marker set for assessing population substructure in association studies, particularly those conducted in Brazilian and other Latin American populations sharing trihybrid ancestry patterns.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of the 677 C-->T mutation of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene in different ethnic groups.
TL;DR: The data indicate that the 677 C-->T MTHFR mutation has a significantly heterogeneous distribution among different ethnic groups, a fact that may contribute to explain geographical or racial differences in the risk for vascular disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of human T cell lymphotropic virus type IIa infection in the Kayapo, an indigenous population of Brazil.
Ricardo Ishak,William J. Harrington,V. N. Azevedo,Nobutaka Eiraku,Marluísa de Oliveira Guimarães Ishak,João Farias Guerreiro,Sidney Santos,Takayuki Kubo,Claude Monken,S. S. Alexander,William W. Hall +10 more
TL;DR: The first identified endemic focus of infection by this subtype of HTLV-II in the Americas was identified in the Kayapo Indian communities in the Amazon region of Brazil.
Journal ArticleDOI
Born to clot : the European burden.
David C. Rees,Nicola H. Chapman,Matthew T. Webster,João Farias Guerreiro,Jacques Rochette,John B. Clegg +5 more
TL;DR: This work has analysed samples from 22 different non‐European countries and shown that this prothrombin variant is very rare outside Europe: one case occurring in India.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ethnic heterogeneity of the factor XIII Val34Leu polymorphism.
Flávia A. Attié-Castro,Marco Antonio Zago,João Lavinha,Jacques Elion,Luis A. Rodriguez-Delfin,João Farias Guerreiro,Rendrik F. Franco +6 more
TL;DR: The data confirmed that FXIII Val34Leu is highly prevalent in Caucasians and indicate that it is rarer in populations of African origin, and showed that it exhibits a significant ethnic heterogeneity, relevant for studies relating this polymorphism with thrombotic and bleeding disorders.
