Unravelling the variability and causes of smallholder maize yield gaps in Ethiopia
Banchayehu Tessema Assefa,Jordan Chamberlin,Pytrik Reidsma,João Vasco Silva,Martin K. van Ittersum +4 more
TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive national level analysis of the drivers of maize yields in Ethiopia, by decomposing yield gaps into efficiency, resource and technology components, and accounting for a broad set of detailed input and crop management choices, is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
A crop model-based approach for sunflower yields
João Guilherme Dal Belo Leite,João Guilherme Dal Belo Leite,João Vasco Silva,Flavio Justino,Martin K. van Ittersum +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the performance of the crop model OILCROP-SUN to simulate sunflower development and growth under Brazilian conditions and explore sunflower water- and nitrogen-limited, water-limited and potential yield and yield variability over an array of sowing dates in the northern region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Journal ArticleDOI
Small farms and development in sub-Saharan Africa: Farming for food, for income or for lack of better options?
Ken E. Giller,Thomas Delaune,João Vasco Silva,João Vasco Silva,Mark T. van Wijk,James Hammond,Katrien Descheemaeker,Gerrie W.J. van de Ven,Antonius G. T. Schut,Godfrey Taulya,Regis Chikowo,Jens A. Andersson +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed analysis of food self-sufficiency, food and nutrition security, and income among households from divergent farming systems in Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is labour a major determinant of yield gaps in sub-Saharan Africa? A study of cereal-based production systems in Southern Ethiopia
TL;DR: In this article, the role of labour in explaining the yield gap of cereals at both crop and farm levels on smallholder farms in Southern Ethiopia was investigated, where a household survey containing detailed information of labour use at crop and farms level of ca. 100 farms in a maize-based system around Hawassa was used for this purpose.
Journal ArticleDOI
Grand challenges for the 21st century: what crop models can and can't (yet) do
João Vasco Silva,Ken E. Giller +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore current trends in crop modelling related to these grand challenges by reflecting on research presented at the Second International Crop Modelling Symposium (iCropM2020).
