Journal ArticleDOI

Francisella tularensis subspecies holarctica occurs in Swedish mosquitoes, persists through the developmental stages of laboratory-infected mosquitoes and is transmissible during blood feeding.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated whether mosquitoes acquire the bacterium as aquatic larvae and transmit the disease as adults in a Swedish area where tularaemia is endemic (Orebro) and found that F. tularensis subsp. holarctica was transmitted to 58% of the adult mosquitoes feeding on diseased mice.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transmission of tularemia from a water source by transstadial maintenance in a mosquito vector

TL;DR: Mice injected with the mosquito homogenates acquired tularemia within 5 days, demonstrating the possibility of transmission of bacteria by adult mosquitoes having acquired the pathogen from their aquatic larval habitats.
Journal ArticleDOI

A New Species of the γ-Proteobacterium Francisella, F. adeliensis Sp. Nov., Endocytobiont in an Antarctic Marine Ciliate and Potential Evolutionary Forerunner of Pathogenic Species.

TL;DR: The correlations of this clade with the other clades raise doubts about a genuine free-living nature of the environmental Francisella species isolated from natural and man-made environments, and suggest to look at F. adeliensis as a pioneer in the Francisella colonization of eukaryotic organisms.
