Colorful thoughts about colorful displays

TL;DR: Borgia et al. (2007) criticized us for not using character state reconstruction and also suggest that the high evolutionary lability of displays within and among lineages limits the use of character state reconstructions.
Journal ArticleDOI

How viewing objects with the dorsal or ventral retina affects colour-related behaviour in guppies (Poecilia reticulata).

TL;DR: The results suggest that the spatial requirement of visual tasks and their ecological context are important and appear to be partly correlated with photoreceptor arrangement in the retina.
Journal ArticleDOI

The role of boundary length and adjacent patch contrast in guppy mate choice

TL;DR: It was found that males with a higher mΔS were more attractive to females and that six boundaries containing either fuzzy black or black as one of the pair colors significantly affected female preferences, indicating that 1) females favored highly conspicuous males and 2) melanin-based patches could be used as a signal amplifier, not only for orange but for other colors.
