We propose a design strategy of elliptical core few-mode fiber (e-FMF) that supports three spatial modes with enhanced mode spacing between LP11a and LP11b, to suppress intra-mode coupling during mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission. Our theoretical investigations show that there exist two optimization regimes for the e-FMF, as a comparison with traditional circular core FMF(c-FMF). At the regime of three-mode operation, there occurs a trade-off between mode spacing and bending-induced loss. Meanwhile, in terms of five-mode regime, a trade-off between mode spacing and high-order mode crosstalk happens. Finally, we fabricate 7.94 km e-FMF with the optimal parameters, based on the commercial fiber manufacture facility. The primary characterizations at 1550 nm show that three spatial modes of e-FMF can be transmitted with a loss less than 0.3 dB/km. Meanwhile, −22.44 dB crosstalk between LP11a and LP11b is observed, even when the 2 km e-FMF is under stress-induced strong perturbation.

Design and fabrication of elliptical-core few-mode fiber for MIMO-less data transmission

Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP) for mode-division multiplexing (MDM) may have high complexity, owing to a plurality of modes and a potentially long group delay (GD) spread in multimode fiber (MMF). This paper addresses the management of GD in MMF and its implications for the complexity and performance of MIMO DSP. First, we review the generalized Jones and Stokes representations for modeling propagation in MMF, and describe key GD properties derived using the two representations. Then, we describe three approaches for GD management: 1) optimized fiber design, 2) mode coupling, and 3) GD compensation. For approach 1), we explain design principles for minimizing the GD spread. We review experimental results to date, showing that fabrication nonidealities significantly increase the GD spread, and this approach alone may not achieve sufficiently low GD spread. For approach 2), we describe mechanisms for inducing intragroup and intergroup coupling. We describe mode scrambler designs based on photonic lanterns or long-period fiber gratings, both of which can ensure strong intergroup coupling. For approach 3), we review GD-compensated system design principles and show that GD compensation is only partially effective in the presence of random intragroup or intergroup coupling. Finally, we provide an overview of adaptive MIMO frequency-domain equalization algorithms. Considering tradeoffs between complexity, performance, and adaptation time, we show that the GD spread is a key factor determining the feasibility of MIMO DSP, and its feasibility requires judicious GD management.

Group Delay Management and Multiinput Multioutput Signal Processing in Mode-Division Multiplexing Systems

We demonstrated the fabrication of bandwidth tunable ultra-broadband mode converters based on CO2-laser inscribed long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) and helical long-period gratings (HLPGs) in a two-mode fiber (TMF). The simulation and experimental results show that there is a dual-resonance coupling from LP01 to LP11 core mode at the dispersion turning point. The mode converters based on the TMF-LPFG and TMF-HLPG provide a 10-dB bandwidth of ∼300 nm and ∼297 nm, respectively, which covers O + E+S + C band. The 1st order orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode based on TMF-LPFG was generated by adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs), while the 1st order OAM mode can be generated directly by the TMF-HLPG. When the twist rate is varied from -36 rad/m ∼ 36 rad/m, the tunable range of the 10-dB bandwidth is ∼52 nm and ∼91 nm for the LPFG and HLPG mode converters, respectively. The ultra-broadband mode converter can be adopted as a bandwidth tunable mode converter, which can be applied in ultra-broadband mode-division-multiplexing transmission systems and optical fiber sensing systems based on few-mode fibers.

The concepts of spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) technology were first proposed in the telecommunications industry as an indispensable solution to reduce the cost-per-bit of optical fiber transmission. Recently, such spatial channels and modes have been applied in optical sensing applications where the returned echo is analyzed for the collection of essential environmental information. The key advantages of implementing SDM techniques in optical measurement systems include the multi-parameter discriminative capability and accuracy improvement. In this paper, to help readers without a telecommunication background better understand how the SDM-based sensing systems can be incorporated, the crucial components of SDM techniques, such as laser beam shaping, mode generation and conversion, multimode or multicore elements using special fibers and multiplexers are introduced, along with the recent developments in SDM amplifiers, opto-electronic sources and detection units of sensing systems. The examples of SDM-based sensing systems not only include Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry or Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDR/BOTDA) using few-mode fibers (FMF) and the multicore fiber (MCF) based integrated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, but also involve the widely used components with their whole information used in the full multimode constructions, such as the whispering gallery modes for fiber profiling and chemical species measurements, the screw/twisted modes for examining water quality, as well as the optical beam shaping to improve cantilever deflection measurements. Besides, the various applications of SDM sensors, the cost efficiency issue, as well as how these complex mode multiplexing techniques might improve the standard fiber-optic sensor approaches using single-mode fibers (SMF) and photonic crystal fibers (PCF) have also been summarized. Finally, we conclude with a prospective outlook for the opportunities and challenges of SDM technologies in optical sensing industry.

Advanced Spatial-Division Multiplexed Measurement Systems Propositions-From Telecommunication to Sensing Applications: A Review.

This article considers, for the first time, optical performance monitoring (OPM) in few mode fiber (FMF)-based optical networks. 1-D features vector, extracted by projecting a 2-D asynchronous in-phase quadrature histogram (IQH), and the 2D IQH are proposed to achieve OPM in FMF-based network. Three machine learning algorithms are employed for OPM and their performances are compared. These include support vector machine, random forest algorithm, and convolutional neural network. Extensive simulations are conducted to monitor optical to signal ratio (OSNR), chromatic dispersion (CD), and mode coupling (MC) for dual polarization-quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) at 10, 12, 16, 20, and 28 Gbaud transmission speeds. Besides, M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M = 8 and 16) is considered. Also, the OPM accuracy is investigated under different FMF channel conditions including phase noise and polarization mode dispersion. Simulation results show that the proposed 1D projection features vector provides better OPM results than those of the widely used asynchronous amplitude histogram (AAH) features. Furthermore, it has been found that the 2D IQH features outperform the 1D projection features but require larger number of features samples. Additionally, the effect of fiber nonlinearity on the OPM accuracy is investigated. Finally, OPM using the 2D IQH features has been verified experimentally for 10 Gbaud DP-QPSK signal. The obtained results show a good agreement between both simulation and experimental findings.

Optical Performance Monitoring in Mode Division Multiplexed Optical Networks

In mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission systems, mode coupling is responsible for inter-modal crosstalk. We consider the transmission of modulated signals over a few-mode fiber (FMF) having low mode coupling and large differential mode group delay in the presence of a non-ideal fiber connection responsible for extra mode coupling. In this context, we first analytically derive the coupling matrix of the multimode connector and we numerically study the dependence of the matrix coefficients as a function of the butt-joint connection characteristics. The numerical results are then validated through an experiment with a five-mode setup. Finally, through numerical simulations, we assess the impact of the connector on the signal quality investigating different receiver digital signal processing (DSP) schemes.

Mode coupling at connectors in mode-division multiplexed transmission over few-mode fiber

We numerically investigate the multi-channel transmission performance of Polarization Switched Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (PS-QPSK) and we compare it to the performance of Polarization-Division-Multiplexed QPSK (PDM-QPSK), using Root Raised Cosine (RRC) spectral shaping, in the context of a flexible channel grid. We point out the impact of the roll-off factor and the potential influence of different dispersion compensation scenarios. Finally, the advantage of PS-QPSK against PDM-QPSK is presented as a function of the system parameters, while we also discuss the benefit of a RRC spectral shaping against a tight filtering at the transmitter side with a 2nd order super-Gaussian-shaped filter.
