Journal ArticleDOI
Probable Person-to-Person Transmission of Legionnaires’ Disease
Ana M. Correia,Joana Ferreira,Vítor Borges,Alexandra Nunes,Bernardo Gomes,Rui Capucho,J. C. Goncalves,Delfina M. Antunes,Sónia Almeida,Ana Magnólia Mendes,Marta Guerreiro,Daniel A. Sampaio,Luís Vieira,Jorge Machado,Maria João Simões,Paulo Bayard Dias Gonçalves,João Paulo Gomes +16 more
TL;DR: Evidence of person-to-person spread of Legionnaires' disease is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ongoing monkeypox virus outbreak, Portugal, 29 April to 23 May 2022
Mariana Perez Duque,S. Ribeiro,João Vieira Martins,P. Casaca,Pedro Pinto Leite,Margarida Tavares,Kamal Mansinho,Luis Luque,Cândida Fernandes,Rita Cordeiro,Maria José Borrego,Ana Pelerito,I. Lopes de Carvalho,Sofia Núncio,Vera Manageiro,Corrado Minetti,Jorge Machado,Joana M Haussig,Roberto Croci,Gianfranco Spiteri,Ana Sofia Casal,Diana Mendes,T. G. Souto,Sara Pocinho,Teresa Fernandes,Ana Firme,Paula Vasconcelos,Graça Freitas +27 more
TL;DR: Most cases were neither part of identified transmission chains, nor linked to travel or had contact with symptomatic persons or with animals, suggesting the possible previously undetected spread of monkeypox.
Journal ArticleDOI
Defective skeletogenesis and oversized otoliths in fish early stages in a changing ocean
Marta S. Pimentel,Marta S. Pimentel,Filipa Faleiro,Gisela Dionísio,Gisela Dionísio,Tiago Repolho,Pedro Pousão-Ferreira,Jorge Machado,Rui Rosa +8 more
TL;DR: It is shown that future predictions of ocean warming and acidification may compromise the development of early life stages of a highly commercial teleost fish, Solea senegalensis, and exposure to future conditions caused a decline in hatching success and larval survival.
Journal ArticleDOI
Massive die-offs of freshwater bivalves as resource pulses.
Ronaldo Sousa,Ronaldo Sousa,Simone Varandas,Rui Cortes,Amílcar Teixeira,Manuel Lopes-Lima,Jorge Machado,Lúcia Guilhermino +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a study was conducted to assess the impact of the 2009/2010 massive die-off on several populations of freshwater bivalves (e.g., Anodonta anatina, Corbicula fluminea, Margaritifera margaritifiera, Potomida littoralis and Unio delphinus) in the catchments of the Rivers Minho, Douro, Tamega, Tua and Sabor.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative Stress and Digestive Enzyme Activity of Flatfish Larvae in a Changing Ocean.
Marta S. Pimentel,Filipa Faleiro,Mário Diniz,Jorge Machado,Pedro Pousão-Ferreira,Myron A. Peck,Hans O. Pörtner,Rui Rosa +7 more
TL;DR: High pCO2 significantly decreased metabolic rates of flatfish larvae, Solea senegalensis, at both present and warmer temperatures, and hypercapnia increased the heat shock response and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, namely catalase and glutathione S-transferase, mainly in post-metamorphic larvae.
