Journal ArticleDOI

Macroinvertebrate community structure in a regulated river segment with different flow conditions

TL;DR: In this article, two types of modification of the hydrological system are present in the same regulated segment of the Lima River (NW Portugal): (a) a reduced and constant flow from hypolimnetic release; (b) an intense irregular flow (daily and seasonal).
Journal ArticleDOI

Impacts of land use conflicts on riverine ecosystems

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the ecological quality of surface water in small mountain streams to establish a relationship between land use, water and aquatic biota, and indicated a significant impact of land use on water quality which has straight influence on the distribution of biota.
Journal ArticleDOI

Massive die-offs of freshwater bivalves as resource pulses.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study was conducted to assess the impact of the 2009/2010 massive die-off on several populations of freshwater bivalves (e.g., Anodonta anatina, Corbicula fluminea, Margaritifera margaritifiera, Potomida littoralis and Unio delphinus) in the catchments of the Rivers Minho, Douro, Tamega, Tua and Sabor.
Journal ArticleDOI

Impacts of climate change and land-use scenarios on Margaritifera margaritifera, an environmental indicator and endangered species.

TL;DR: In view of future climate and land-use change scenarios, conservation strategies are proposed, including the negotiation of ecological flows with the dam promoters, the replanting of riparian vegetation along the water course and the reintroduction of native tree species throughout the catchment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Factors Affecting Macroinvertebrate Richness and Diversity in Portuguese Streams: a Two-Scale Analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the spatial patterns in macroinvertebrate taxon richness and abundance at two scales: sampling unit and basin, and proposed that the number of taxa at a small scale depends on the number number of individuals, which in turn is the result of organic matter accumulation, hydrologic and substratum characteristics.
