In this review article the available results about application of sol–gel synthesis method for the preparation of different calcium phosphates and composite materials are summarized. The attention is paid to calcium phosphate-containing compounds which show the biological properties and could be used as potential phosphate bioceramics in medicine. It was demonstrated that the sol–gel synthesis method is a powerful tool for the synthesis of calcium hydroxyapatite and other phosphates, and different calcium phosphate-based composites at mild synthetic conditions resulted in high reproducibility, high phase purity, and desired morphology. Thus, the sol–gel synthesis method enables the researchers to develop biomaterials with superior features in terms of biomedical applications.

Prosthesis-associated infections and aseptic loosening are major causes of implant failure. There is an urgent need to improve the antibacterial ability and osseointegration of orthopedic implants. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are a common type of zinc-containing metal oxide nanoparticles that have been widely studied in many fields, such as food packaging, pollution treatment, and biomedicine. The ZnO-NPs have low toxicity and good biological functions, as well as antibacterial, anticancer, and osteogenic capabilities. Furthermore, ZnO-NPs can be easily obtained through various methods. Among them, green preparation methods can improve the bioactivity of ZnO-NPs and strengthen their potential application in the biological field. This review discusses the antibacterial abilities of ZnO-NPs, including mechanisms and influencing factors. The toxicity and shortcomings of anticancer applications are summarized. Furthermore, osteogenic mechanisms and synergy with other materials are introduced. Green preparation methods are also briefly reviewed.

ZnO nanorods were capped with a simple amino acid, viz., L-alanine to increase the carrier concentration and improve the performance of ZnO/CuI heterojunction diodes. The effect of L-alanine capping on the morphology, structural, optical, electrochemical and electrical properties of ZnO nanorods had been studied in detail. The stable structure with two equally strong Zn–O coordinate bonds predicted by density functional theory was in agreement with the experimental results of FTIR spectroscopy. Due to the presence of electron-releasing (+I effect) moieties in L-Alanine, the carrier concentration of capped ZnO nanorods was two orders of magnitude higher and the ZnO/CuI heterojunction device showed more than a two-fold increase in the photovoltaic power conversion efficiency.

L-Alanine capping of ZnO nanorods: increased carrier concentration in ZnO/CuI heterojunction diode

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) complexes of Ag(I) and Au(III) were synthesized by wet chemical method. The structural, optical, 1HNMR, ICP – MS and electrochemical studies of the complexes were carried out. The TUNEL assay studies of Ag(I)MBT and Au(III)MBT complexes on A549 cell line indicated induced apoptosis in the cells. TUNEL assay showed 60% cell viability for Ag(I)MBT whereas 80% for Au(III)MBT. Thus Ag(I)MBT can induce cell apoptosis in cells at a higher rate than Au(III)MBT. Therefore these complexes studied here can be a viable option as anti – proliferating agent.

Ag(I) and Au(III) Mercaptobenzothiazole complexes induced apoptotic cell death

Green synthesis of copper iodide from Jamun seed extract (Syzygium cumini) is done and capped with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). The structural, morphological, optical and electrochemical properties of capped and uncapped CuI were compared. Optical studies indicate 0.34 eV decrease in the bandgap of CuI upon capping with MBT. Electrochemical Impedance Analysis (EIS) revealed four orders of magnitude increase in the electrical conductivity and two times increase in ionic conductivity upon capping by MBT. This lowering of band gap and higher electrical conductivity for CuI–MBT makes it a suitable material for optoelectronic devices and thin film solar cell applications in comparison with uncapped CuI.
