Journal ArticleDOI

Application of sewage sludge to agricultural soil increases the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes without altering the composition of prokaryotic communities.

TL;DR: Sewage sludge-derived amendments must be properly treated and managed if they are to be applied to agricultural soil, posing a risk of dissemination of antibiotic resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Potential Benefits and Risks for Soil Health Derived From the Use of Organic Amendments in Agriculture

TL;DR: There is, currently, much interest in the development of efficient strategies to mitigate the risks associated to the application of organic amendments to agricultural soil, while benefiting from their numerous advantages.
Journal ArticleDOI

The application of fresh and composted horse and chicken manure affects soil quality, microbial composition and antibiotic resistance

TL;DR: Genes encoding mobile genetic elements (tnpA, intI1) were positively correlated with ARGs, suggesting a risk of dissemination of antibiotic resistance via HGT in agricultural soils, as a result of the application of livestock manure-derived amendments.
Journal ArticleDOI

The impact of nanoscale zero-valent iron particles on soil microbial communities is soil dependent

TL;DR: It was concluded that the impact of nZVI on soil microbial communities and, hence, soil quality, is soil dependent.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization of Composted Organic Amendments for Agricultural Use

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors characterized seven amendments used in organic farming, in order to evaluate the agro-environmental consequences of their utilization, and concluded that the only amendments that met the Spanish legal requirements for “Class A” fertilizers were composted intensive and organic cow manure.
