Journal ArticleDOI

Mechanism and functions of membrane binding by the Atg5-Atg12/Atg16 complex during autophagosome formation.

TL;DR: It is shown that the yeast Atg5–Atg12/Atg16 complex directly binds membranes, and membrane binding by AtG5 is downstream of its recruitment to the pre‐autophagosomal structure but is essential for autophagy and cytoplasm‐to‐vacuole transport at a stage preceding Atg8 conjugation and vesicle closure.
Journal ArticleDOI

p62 filaments capture and present ubiquitinated cargos for autophagy

TL;DR: This study developed a reconstituted system using purified components and shows that p62 and ubiquitinated proteins spontaneously coalesce into larger clusters, providing mechanistic insights on how substrates are channeled into autophagy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oligomerization of p62 allows for selection of ubiquitinated cargo and isolation membrane during selective autophagy

TL;DR: In this article, the human cargo receptor p62/SQSTM-1 employs oligomerization to stabilize its interaction with LC3B and linear ubiquitin when they are clustered on surfaces.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cargo binding to Atg19 unmasks additional Atg8 binding sites to mediate membrane–cargo apposition during selective autophagy

TL;DR: It is shown that cargo directly activates the cargo receptor Atg19 by exposing multiple Atg8 binding sites in a fully reconstituted system and that cargo receptors contribute to tight membrane bending of the isolation membrane around the cargo.
