Journal ArticleDOI
Trends in underlying causes of death in people with HIV from 1999 to 2011 (D:A:D): a multicohort collaboration
Colette J Smith,Lene Ryom,Rainer Weber,Philippe Morlat,Christian Pradier,Peter Reiss,Justyna D. Kowalska,Stéphane De Wit,Matthew Law,Wafaa El Sadr,Ole Kirk,Nina Friis-Møller,Antonella d'Arminio Monforte,Andrew N. Phillips,Caroline A. Sabin,Jens D Lundgren +15 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesised that the substantially reduced rates of liver disease and cardiovascular disease deaths over time could be explained by improved use of non-HIV-specific preventive interventions, linked with continued improvement in CD4 cell count.
Journal ArticleDOI
Decreasing mortality and changing patterns of causes of death in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study
Rainer Weber,M Ruppik,Martin Rickenbach,Adrian Spoerri,Hansjakob Furrer,Manuel Battegay,Matthias Cavassini,Alexandra Calmy,Enos Bernasconi,Patrick Schmid,Markus Flepp,Justyna D. Kowalska,Bruno Ledergerber +12 more
TL;DR: Mortality among HIV‐infected persons is decreasing, and causes of death are changing, and classification of deaths is hampered because of low autopsy rates, frequent deaths outside of hospitals, and shortcomings of ICD10 coding.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serious fatal and nonfatal non-AIDS-defining illnesses in Europe
Amanda Mocroft,Peter Reiss,J Gasiorowski,Bruno Ledergerber,Justyna D. Kowalska,Antonio Chiesi,Jose M. Gatell,A Rakhmanova,Margaret A. Johnson,Ole Kirk,Jens D Lundgren +10 more
TL;DR: Non-AIDS events were common in the combination antiretroviral therapy era and associated with considerably mortality and evidence on the impact of modifying immunodeficiency and lifestyle-related factors on the risk of non- AIDS events in HIV-infected persons is an important but unmet research need.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk of all-cause mortality associated with nonfatal AIDS and serious non-AIDS events among adults infected with HIV.
Jacqueline Neuhaus,Brian Angus,Justyna D. Kowalska,Alberto La Rosa,Jim Sampson,Deborah Wentworth,Amanda Mocroft +6 more
TL;DR: Among HIV-infected persons with higher CD4+ cell counts, SNA events occur more frequently and are associated with a greater risk of death than AIDS events, according to the Kaplan–Meier method.
Journal ArticleDOI
The coding causes of death in hiv (code) project initial results and evaluation of methodology
Justyna D. Kowalska,Nina Friis-Møller,Ole Kirk,Wendy P. Bannister,Amanda Mocroft,Caroline A. Sabin,Peter Reiss,John Gill,Charlotte Lewden,Andrew N. Phillips,Antonella d'Arminio Monforte,Matthew Law,Jonathan A C Sterne,Stéphane De Wit,Jens D Lundgren +14 more
TL;DR: The extent and format of data collected in the CoDe Project appear to be sufficient for an informed review, and the proposed coding scheme is adequate for obtaining an underlying cause of death.
